Two chapters into _A Memory Called Empire_ but thinking I might bail. Too much exposition and explanation. Don't tell me anything! I don't want to understand *shit*. I should have to read it twice to figure out what's going on. #sff
Update: halfway through so I'm officially bailing on _A Memory Called Empire_. I'm not sure I've ever encountered a published work (as opposed to fanfiction written by the barely literate) that so aggressively tells instead of shows. Besides, not really into palace intrigue kind of stuff. #sff #dnf
@nev okay so the trick here is that by exposition dumping a bunch of things, that just expands the surface of things that can be left totally unexplained
@mcc I'll soldier through it but it's very annoying

@mcc @nev

I thought the exposition paid off later in the book as things accelerate.

@emmah @mcc @nev Same! It just got more and more enjoyable for me.
@fansipans @emmah @mcc @nev yep, I think the dense setup is the price you have to pay for entering a rich strange world. Without it the rest wouldn’t have enough foundation to be plausible.
@nev I made it through (and the sequel) and enjoyed it. Turns out I have a thing for sf novels by people with backgrounds in #ByzantineHistory...
@nev Ada Palmer is the cure for that.
