Just wanted to thank all in this instance for adding image descriptions. To a totally blind person like me it means a lot to have a picture in my mind of your images, especially the animal pics.
@WirlOfWirls oh yikes I need to do better with my descriptions. I do them, but didn't really feel it until I saw this.
@Essjax Glad to have posted something meaningful ☺️ It's really beautiful to read all the descriptions, makes me feel this really is an inclusive world.
@WirlOfWirls I love this place and that aspect is one of the reasons. I'm just sorry my pic descriptions have been a bit average so far. I can do better.
@Essjax Any effort is more appreciated than none, you're doing fine 💞
@WirlOfWirls @Essjax Can I ask how a question?Tanya
@Willam67 @Essjax You can ask me a question anytime you like.
@WirlOfWirls @Essjax I’ll will be expecting a message from you…

@WirlOfWirls Hi. TBH it's a new thing for me to be doing since landing here from Twitter. One thing I've asked of a few alt-text users, do you prefer just a description of the image or a littl bit of personalisation and like the directors cut commentary too.

Shameless plug here. My greyhound toots and posts pictures of her and our other greyhound housemate as @MavisTheMoocher

@AlfgarDalio @MavisTheMoocher It depends on how detailed the picture is, a lot of detail goes a long way if the pic is something quite unique.
@WirlOfWirls @MavisTheMoocher ah thank you, mine are not hugely detailed nor that good pics, mostly off the cuff phone stuff and lots of the dogs and local walks.
@WirlOfWirls good to know they are being useful
@WirlOfWirls Hi! I was here seeing some toots and noticing that many new members of the Fediverse are sharing their great work and mashing a hard effort to write good descriptions of their photos but I hadn't come across anyone thanking them when I came across your toot. If I may suggest something, in case you haven't done it before, toot in reply to some of them. I believe it will be more effective. Have a great weekend!
@WirlOfWirls hi from N Ireland. I’m sighted but trying to remember to do image descriptions.
@WirlOfWirls it has been something I’ve learned about quite recently, and to hear what a difference it makes helps me become more aware of providing #alttext and looking to share more meaningfully. Thankyou for this reminder ❤️
@WirlOfWirls I love Star Trek TNG too!
@Jkw That's really cool, I'm extremely addicted to TNG. Who are your fave characters?
@WirlOfWirls I like the interactions and ideas a lot, especially the ones with Data. I like that the crew grows on you as the seasons progress.
@Jkw That is one of my favourite aspects of '80's and '90's Trek. For an android who doesn't feel emotion, I find Data's scenes most moving.

@WirlOfWirls exactly, and Data's endless earnest quest to become more human (even though, in more than one way he far exceeds our capabilities), to me is like a mirror: technology may exceed us in many ways, but to be human is and will remain something special nonetheless.

In a time where AI starts to really progress, see chatGPT for example, that notion kind of is comforting too.

@WirlOfWirls
That's one thing I've made a vow to do as a newbie here. It's hard on older social media but I will do it here, unless I absolutely forget but I'll try.
I think it's so cool that's actually a thing!

@WirlOfWirls

Writing a good image caption is fun with a purpose. Thank you for the opportunities!

@WirlOfWirls any suggestions for doing great descriptions?
@KLB The description could be as simple as a juice-filled jug sitting on a table," or a multi-coloured jug, filled with frothing juice, sitting on a white, flowery tablecloth, atop a dark wooden table with spindly legs." Sometimes the description comes down to time and imagination, but even a simple description is appreciated.

@WirlOfWirls

Thank you for posting this, I've read your replies to questions and it is really helpful. I don't think my descriptions have been adequate so I will ensure that they are better in future.
I think this is one of the best things about mastodon, it is far more inclusive than the bird.

@WirlOfWirls I love trying to be descriptive but also throw my personality in so I hope I’m doing a good job. I’m so happy to be able to do this
@micro_meredith Personality is what makes people's descriptions captivating.
@WirlOfWirls It’s an interesting exercise to describe watercolour paintings. What helps you the most in the desriptions?
@jclittle Interesting question, I'm not sure if this makes sense, but assuming you were trying to describe a water colour painting to someone who'd never seen one before, what are the aspects you'd find most fascinating about the picture?
@WirlOfWirls Hey you answered my question with another question, no fair lol!
I suppose I’m wondering if it helps to read some kind of story in the description. Like, “Watercolour painting of a heron standing in a pond” vs “Watercolour painting of a heron poised to strike it’s lunch in a pond”.
@jclittle Personally, there is no such thing as too many details so I loved your second example. That being said, having to provide a ton of details could be off-putting if a non-artistic person was describing the pic, so I guess it depends on how far one's imagination stretches.
@WirlOfWirls well good. I’m always tempted to give more context, because so much is implied in expression and posture. I’ve read other descriptions and they can be so …dry. So I’m glad I asked 😅 THANK YOU.
@jclittle I'm so glad you asked, it gave my brain something gritty to think about. I've got a creative mind that is always designing things, so context means a lot to me too.
@WirlOfWirls I have started doing it and will try to make it a habit.
@WirlOfWirls I've been trying to do this - I had always filled in alt tags in my web work but had never stopped to think of what they should really contain.
@SteveLionel Thank you so much for always considering us, that is heartwarming.
@WirlOfWirls That has taken some getting used to on my part, but I followed @PleaseCaption, who reminds me to whenever I forget - super handy!
@WirlOfWirls Reading the comments here, I’m glad I’m not the only one who sweats over “am I rambling in this ALT TEXT” or “Does that really give enough to describe it”. Every time I poke a toot that has an image with ALT TEXT I read it and compare to the pic to try and learn and do better.
@WirlOfWirls @hjhornbeck I *love* writing image descriptions, and I’m so glad they’re helpful! They exercise our writing chops and let us evesdrop on our own brains at work. Plus: great opportunity to share even more #LameJokes!
@WirlOfWirls
Hey Tanya, I never add descriptions to my images. Mainly because I am a little bit lazy and also because I never understood what my description could add to the context given in the associated text.

Does your screen reader provide AI generated descriptions of images?

What kind of image description helps the most?

Thanks in advance!
@kaputse AI only describes the images if a photo can be saved and imported from Mastodon, and I haven't yet come across a Mastodon app that will let you save media. Even a brief description of an image is very much appreciated.
@WirlOfWirls
Understood 👍

With "save media" you mean a function in the context of a single post to export all attached images to that post?

Which Mastodon/Fediverse app do you use?
@kaputse I use Mona, and the Mastodon app.
