I think there is a good chance that a significant number of the instances in the #fediverse will end up self-segregating along race, language and other types of identities, geographies and affinities.

But unlike a school or a bus or all the other terrible types of segregation that exist and existed in "the real world", the fediverse doesn't restrict people to only one location in time and space.

There is no reason why people can't be on an Indigenous instance and on a French-language instance and a biking instance at the same time.

I think we should normalize this from the beginning.

@chema How would that work? If I'm posting from a Jewish perspective, I do it from one of my accounts, but if I'm posting about tech, another account?

Where would I post about synagogue management software?

@MeanestBossEver Both. You post from one account and boost from the other. There's no reason to hide your multipresence.

@chema I get where you're going but that's a weird extra step.

That said, I agree the current model where we have to choose a single "family" is quite lacking.

We are all multifaceted. Figuring out how to support that will be exciting growth for the #Fediverse.

@MeanestBossEver Here's the cool thing: it doesn't have to be an extra step. There's no technical reason why clients couldn't post and boost on two separate instances with one click. Maybe based on hashtags or context or language.
@MeanestBossEver @Tusky on Android already let's meet be logged into to my various echos. It would be super simple for the app to dual post or combo (post and then boost) content.

@chema I think this natural partitioning with result in more calm and friendly conversation as well, without the pathologies that overly broad reach created on Twitter.

I think back to the days of message boards, and I think it was largely a better time on the web than the globalization of Facebook and Twitter.

Federation is the best of both worlds. Can maintain presence on the small servers of your choice for good connection, and if desired, hook up to the big ones for that.

@jasonkotenko Absolutely. It also "solves" the freedom of speech issue by leveraging freedom of association and the fediblock issue because ideas and thoughts still permeate through.

God, I need to compile all these thoughts into a book!

@chema

So far I'm on two #instances. Federatedpress (journalism ) and mstdn.party (for anyone). I just read about how the #fediverse is like a bunch of different dorms with different rules for that group (like a school or bus riding group.) Fine. And you can visit each other's rooms, get on and off the bus, be in many places at once, right? "Self-segregating" - not a bad thing, not at all. And being #indigenous to somewhere is a wonderful concept.

#NativePlants of Puget Sound, my focus.

@chema That's more or less been the case here for years.
Cool. I joined back in 2009 when identi.ca was a thing, then again in 2017 but my instance died, so I am catching up.
@chema That's an interesting thought. I use Mastodon from a browser tho so I'd have to log in and log out to post/read from different instances. But there's maybe some app that allows one to operate accounts on multiple instances without the login/logout? #noob
I use the web interface as well, but it seems like there are some desktop app options. I will check some out and report: https://joinmastodon.org/apps

@chema I like the sound of this. People naturally form self-segregated groups based on a common interest (i.e. Disco, Polka, Country) but usually also belong to more than one group. Putting everybody into one huge room (cough*birdsite) naturally leads to conflicts. There's a danger of echo chambers but that happens even on the birdsite, so...
