@luka secret fifth thing (I don’t filter because I don’t care)
@luka on an unrelated note I love how scuffed fedilab polls are atm (latest beta)
@luka akkoma doesn't support language filters or even language tagging
@luka The language setting I use most often isn't listed—I set the language of each post to whichever language I'm using in it (using the language button that appears next to the visibility and CW ones when writing).

@timtfj yeah, sorry, the part "on your posts" is redundant. I wanted to ask two questions in one poll but run out of options. so the queston is how you "read" (not post) posts of various languages.

your use is valid and great, but people also have to have this setting in their config for this feature to actually work.

@luka It's quite limiting only being able to have four options in polls, I think. I've seen ones with five occasionally, but they may all have been from the same server.
@luka imo language filters are like you are missing a lot, especially when people don't actually use language tags properly (which, i don't blame them, it's annoying to set them either permanently, or on a post-by-post basis, like why does it reset after you send last post, and then like i don't think anyone besides mastodon supports them anyways

@luka Ï filter languages I don't understand. In my defense (?) I have something like 15 languages activated that I *do* understand (or am willing to look up the parts I don't understand).

It has nothing to do with negative sentiments against languages I don't understand, I just don't have the time & energy to look up translations for everything and scrolling a lot gets tedious.

@luka t'ho jure que les faig totes. Depèn
@luka I'm happy to see and translate unknown languages with the integrated translation feature. It only works if the language is set by authors before sending their posts
@luka after putting filters on I would miss posts or replies or accounts that used mostly English but were labeled German or Spanish or something. So I turned them off.
@luka @paquita I take advantage of the translate feature in the web interface.

@luka I have my filter set to English, since that is the only language I speak. But other languages still come through occasionally, and I’m not sure why.

For the purposes of this poll, I’m not sure how to answer. I have a filter in place, but it is inconsistent.

(Obviously I don’t see it when it works, so “inconsistent” could be anything from “it isn’t working at all” to “it catches almost all of it, but a few slip through.”)

@luka I follow some people that occasionally post in languages I don't know. What I can't make sense of myself gets the Google translate.
@luka I don't want a filter. I want a built-in translator.
@adrianmorales supposedly mastodon 4.0 supports it but admin has to configure it
@luka Actively don't filter, seeing unknown languages always gives me a smile!
@luka I set the language tags, but haven't yet found how to filter them on either Mastodon web or Tusky.
@rbairwell settings > preferences > other in webUI. it will filter for all clients, incl Tusky
@luka Thanks: already had that set, but it's only for public timelines (like local and federated) not Home.
@luka I tried filtering language but it didn't work
@luka i just wish i could have a translate button 🥲

Attached: 1 image I'm really glad our server, #SocialCoop, enabled Mastodon 4.0's translation feature. I'm now following a few non-English accounts and it's super-seamless. I actually prefer it to Twitter's, in which I can't translate from the timeline view, only from individual tweets (web UI). If your server doesn't have it enabled yet, might be worth considering! And if it does - go follow some non-English accounts and give it a try :)

@luka I filter but include lots of languages I don't understand
@luka i'm late to the party but I filter for the languages I speak (Polish, German, Swedish, English) and the ones which I kind of understand when reading (Norwegian, Danish)
