Condemning a GOP presidential candidate for dining with a neo-Nazi and holocaust denier should be the easiest thing for Republicans to do. Their refusal to do so makes clear how much Trump has succeeded in normalizing this dangerous behavior.
@StevenBeschloss One would imagine that the RJC and the other vocal "Jewish" organizations that have continued to support Republicans would say something -- anything -- about how unacceptable Republican leadership's consistent silence about this kind of stuff is. But all I hear are crickets.
@adamlordosurety @StevenBeschloss they do not speak for many of us who are unwilling to make the same bargain.
@StevenBeschloss The Germany-early 1930s playbook rolls on.
@StevenBeschloss “normalized” is old news and we’d do well to stop normalizing our surprise that the GOP is a party of racists and bigots. This has been happening routinely for years now. Trump is no outlier.
@StevenBeschloss He allowed Republicans to embrace their true selves.
@StevenBeschloss Perpetually disheartening to see the direction the Republican Party chooses to take this country. We will always speak out against this.
@JordanS @StevenBeschloss speak out, but also reach out to decent, disenfranchised conservatives.
@amirot @StevenBeschloss Agree. Just need to hear them speak up and speak out. McConnell and McCarthy did not after Trump’s recent dinner with haters at Mar-a-lago. Heard nothing from others in a position to publicly denounce.
@StevenBeschloss it’s because of what I posted this morning “The Voting-eligible population in the US was 239,247,182 in 2020. Even if you take 30% of that it comes to 71,774,154 🤔 ... think about that. Let that shit sink in. Over 71 million still support tRump and his ilk. That is pretty disturbing. That is over 71 million racist, Neo nazi, homophobic asshats.” In a nutshell they are terrified of losing or “disenfranchising” over 71 million 🦇 💩 crazy.

@StevenBeschloss Steven, it's REALLY important to diagnose correctly: Republicans don't condemn Trump's dining with a holocaust denier BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO PRINCIPLES. They are devoid of morals. They care about nothing and no one. They will literally do ANYTHING for power and money.

And when I say "anything" I MEAN anything.

Please don't give them the appearance of people who have morals.

@IdoAmir @StevenBeschloss

"Please don't give them the appearance of people who have morals."

I *really* wish the media would pick up on this. I'm guessing most journalists know this but are afraid to publish well-known facts that lead to this conclusion--out of a fear of being branded as biased.

@StevenBeschloss There used to be a time where cable hosts used to ask "Will THIS be Republicans' red line?"

It's time to realize Republicans HAVE NO red line.

@IdoAmir @StevenBeschloss the Republican party has no red line. Individual, decent conservatives may be different.
@StevenBeschloss
It should be easy to condemn consorting with Nazis.
But Republican reaction says far more about what the GOP believes in, stands for, and supports.
Trump didn’t change the Republican Party, he just allowed them to reveal what they truly are: The American Fascist Party.
@StevenBeschloss It would be interesting to compile a list of, say, just the top 10 dangerous behaviors he has normalized.
@StevenBeschloss The media still normalizes, enables and explains Trump. The media still allow Republicans to support Trump with no repercussions. Media have learned nothing. Media refuse to admit mistakes and make changes.
@StevenBeschloss
Even as they try to create some distance they can't publicly condemn his behavior.
@StevenBeschloss It should have been easy to condemn an attempted extortion of a foreign president, or an attempted coup. Or 900,000 dead through criminal negligence but that's the contemporary Republican party: spineless and/or all in with destroying the US from within.
@StevenBeschloss Heck, even Trump seemed to express concerns over the "surprise extra guest". But as an ex-president it cannot have been too surprising as they would have to have gone via the Secret Service detail.

@StevenBeschloss That was the basic premise of my post less than 2 hours ago.

The GOP are cowards and are still hoping for a Trump boost ... But not in a Mastodon way.

@StevenBeschloss You give Republicans a lot of credit. Perhaps the lack of response to Trump’s behavior is about GOP showing their true colors. They’ve likely felt more uncomfortable with what they think of as “PC” behavior than with what Trump or his lackeys say and do.
@StevenBeschloss they just realize a significant part of their base would be alienated by this, which is incredibly distressing
@StevenBeschloss the authoritarianism and cruelty are the features, not a bug for the Republican party! History keeps repeating itself. This path was already tried by the same party in the 1940's with Nazi sympathizers in Congress and the America First party! The same exact tactics were used .. attacking the prosecutors as not being American enough. Not sure what will ever break this cycle of flirting with authoritarianism!
