Raf Epstein talking about how the LNP are saying “they’re not nazis they’re just crazy” about their candidates. Perhaps the selection process might need an overhaul?

@cjbrokaw the problem, like with all of the Liberal Party (fed or state), is that there's massive branch stacking going on, and when that fails, the leadership team overrules local branches. There's no path to change for a party so hell bent on getting the candidates the leadership wants, rather than what their local members want #auspol
@sortius branch stacking is a problem for all the parties- the ALP have had some real problems with this. It’s the poor choice of candidates who seem to be real kooks. The US conservatives got infiltrated by the Tea Party movement and are still suffering. Australia it’s the crazies and the Pentecostals. #auspol

@cjbrokaw yeh, branch stacking is a problem for all parties, the Liberal Party are just better at it than the rest 😬

Agreed, there's a serious problem Pentecostal christo-fascists hijacking conservatism in Australia, and they will succeed as conservatives become more desperate. I honestly don't think the Liberal Party can come back from where they are now. Too much young conservative talent is being put off by their decisions #auspol

@sortius @cjbrokaw Membership stacking is an issue for many organisations beyond just political parties. It's just way more serious at the political level.

I do wonder what can realistically be done about it.

Require membership for a certain period of time before voting?

Can't vote on preselections until after an election?

@LordPhantom @cjbrokaw they've tried all that, and it just doesn't work. It has to be a culture change. Maybe a way of distancing the central party machine from the branches. Even then, it's open to exploitation
@sortius @cjbrokaw Yeah it's a tricky one. I think the reality is, you just have to accept that people can stack branches, and hope that the general constituents will do their home work on candidates and not vote for the really out there ones.
@LordPhantom @cjbrokaw TL;DR we're screwed? 😂
@sortius @cjbrokaw I would perhaps not go quite that far. :-) Lets work on educating the voters to care enough to read about their candidates and vote for good people rather than one party or another.

@LordPhantom @cjbrokaw I'm trying, but trying to scrape the rust off some is so difficult.

While I normally vote Green, I have no contract with them to do so, which is why I didn't give them first preference this election (they have good policies, just a TERF problem they need to deal with). The beauty of preferential voting is you can vote for the people you like, while still ensuring you're not helping the people you really don't like.

No such thing as a wasted vote in Australia, so long as you number every box 😁

@sortius @cjbrokaw Absolutely. Preferential voting is the gold standard. I pity places that don't have it.
@sortius Right now I don’t see what the path forward is for the conservatives. Maybe it’s going to be a new, more moderate party? Depends who (if anyone) has the appetite for this. Clive, PHON, et al tried to drag them to the right and that’s (thankfully) failed. #auspol
@cjbrokaw @sortius Eventually, I think the Teals will amalgamate into a single centre-right party and will replace the Liberals who will gradually diminish themselves into an irrelevant hard right conservative minor party.
@AaronDodd When you import people of the calibre of Mr Woke himself that's not a little lurch to the right - thats waaaay out on the naughty step. Morrison packed all their goodies into his mini-van, chucked the Party into the boot and drove the libs off a cliff.
@AaronDodd @sortius sort of a conservative Green Party? Social democrats, but fiscally conservative? If they manage to keep candidates of the calibre of the “teal” independents then the LNP will be completely irrelevant. Sky news will be screaming into an emptier abyss.

@cjbrokaw @AaronDodd @sortius

They need to learn how the economy works. "Fiscally conservative" means they subscribe to the myths of debt and deficit.
