#introduction post. Here I am, yet another Black woman coming from a different instance because the #Fediverse is the wild racist west of the internet. I'm not sure if I'll stay on this platform, but before I just packed up and left town I thought it would be worthwhile to share some of what I've noticed ... because after a few weeks on a different instance, I'm not sure #Mastodon is a safe place to be me.

@ehh I’d like to hear about what you’ve experienced. It’s such a fragmented network so it’s really hard to research or investigate bad behavior on here.

@peterbutler That right there is one of the inherent problems/things that makes me afraid on this platform. (You probably already know this part..) The primary tool for "safety" here is to build digital borders and segregate people. If bad actors were coming after me in my mentions you might not be able to see them if your admin has blocked them or their instances. So from your feed it might look like I was just freaking out about nothing.

@ehh @peterbutler But shouldn’t *your* admin block them or their instances? I have read that some admins get together to discuss defederating problematic servers. This seems to be a collective defense problem and you shouldn’t be hanging out there unsupported.

@jbc_3 @peterbutler (Apologies Peter if you don't want this in your mentions) The "beat them back with blocks" idea is unique to white cultural norms. It's literally a call for segregation and building digital border walls. Black people are a part of a global diaspora... building little bubbles won't help us be together with each other and the non-Black members of our personal communities. #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter

@peterbutler (Sorry Peter) @jbc_3 Also, LOL what. Did you read? Sorry, I didn't realize I was repeating myself. Very weird that I'd already made the point about segregation + digital borders and you came in with the #WhatAboutIsms. I'd like to be with all my people, whatever instance they choose. You describe the well intentioned scenario. If your admin blocks the instance your siblings are on then y'll are SOL. There's no requirement that the admin even tell you before doing it

Apologies if you feel butted in upon but this thread popped up...after getting brigaded for voicing solidarity with BIPOC I did a little poking around & if you had any idea what is outside the walls of federation you would understand that walling off nzi racist agitator trolls is unavoidable & not really "unique to white cultural norms".

Cultures have kept armed violent raiders out for centuries. Eg., Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai". Also, some ppl post threads "yts don't reply" which is a form of walling.
