Putin has huge influence over right wing Republicans all of whom don’t understand how international trade works and want the US to be a hermit country. That’s where this story likely comes from. Thought he's always had somewhat top-gear ideas, such as advocating the impeachment of every president since Reagan (who he worked for). He might be a brilliant legal mind, but his foreign policy acumen seems to be crap. He seems to understand little about Russia.
