I created this regional instance to have a "local, but federated" experience. When I open up the local feed, I see stuff that is (mostly) relevant to the area that I live in, but my personal feed and the wider federated feed has all of the connections that I don't want to be without.

Local means a lot of things, but to me, a big part of that is connecting with and participating in local events.

That is why I'm creating https://github.com/ngerakines/apevents.

GitHub

(ActivityPub Events) apevents is a federated event platform that provides event creation and coordination across the fediverse. The vision is to support the fediverse through event creation, management, and moderation tools, emphasizing the use of the activitpub and activitystreams protocols and APIs.

The project is open source and hosted on github (for now) and still in its infancy. If you are interested in working an open source rust project that touches the fediverse and supports communities, send me a message. If you are interested in supporting this project in other ways, we are early in the planning stages for internationalization and localization and community organizing and would love your input.

@nick I'd love to be involved in the project. My main reason for using Facebook and Meetup is for events. Would love a more open alternative and was considering starting a project myself over the past week. I'll spread the word around gemcity.tech
@SteakPinball Fantastic. I'm in the same situation. I really don't like Facebook or Meetup, but they've made themselves essential to creating meetups and public events. Their hold on communities needs disrupting.
@nick Oh cool, we were definitely missing a federated meetup clone. I’d be interested 🀚
@vladimir_lu Awesome, I'm going to fill in some github issues based on what is outlined in the readme. For now, go star the project and keep an eye on issues coming in. I'm going to post updates using the #apevents-project hashtag.
@vladimir_lu TIL that the dash character breaks up tags in #mastodon. Will probably just use #apevents then.
@nick That's a great idea, looking forward to trying it.
@nick What's up, Dayton? #GemCity's my hometown 🀘🏽🀘🏽

@nick

Looks like a great idea. Getting events to be a first-class object in this space sounds fun. Sign me up to help in some unspecified way.

There's a good (but cautionary) tale of upcoming.org which was a Web 2.0 events platform, see https://medium.com/message/diary-of-a-corporate-sellout-587479c215f4 for the writeup.
