A new workload model means I’m teaching three times more than last year
I’m worse off in real terms than I was a decade ago
And they’ve taken a large chunk out of my pension without negotiation
Are you at all surprised I’m on strike today?
We need to bring universities back into the public sector and fund them properly

@Molly
Full solidarity with all striking today.

@Molly not just a little bit worse off either. I think it's around 20%; we haven't had a real terms pay rise for 12 years.
@Molly To what extent have universities been in the public sector, and which ones have moved and how?
@TimWardCam They were always private corporations but run more like trusts or charities and with a public sector ethos. Gentlemen’s agreements again. Wide open to profiteering and unscrupulous managers. Our contract similar comes from an earlier era of decency and respect and gives us little protection now we are part of a cut-throat market

@Molly I've certainly heard rumours from within a university of mutterings around "going completely private", ie not accepting British students on government terms, ie with capped fees on which they lose money, any more.

And I have observed the casualisation of the academic workforce, with more people being hired ad hoc for the odd lecture course or to give a few supervisions.

@TimWardCam @Molly Why does everyone assume the alternatives are private or the state? Doughnuts! Households, the commons, markets and states. Universties are part of the commons, commoning. They therefores should be coops, completely open source. We do love our feudal enclosing habitus
@Molly That would be robbery in any other instance!

My daughter went to McGill in Montreal. Fees (international student rates) were less than UK. 390 contact hours pa guaranteed.
My kids were in a private school to 16. At the end we were paying £16k pa for about 8-900 teaching hours pa, class sizes ~15.
What I’d like to know is: where does the £9k/student pa go? Because it quite clearly isn’t to the teaching staff.
