I am reading where #black people are being mistreated on Mastodon. The instance I chose, "mindly.social," appears to be very welcoming. I have not received any adverse reactions to my posts from anyone. I suppose it depends on the individual #fedicommunity.

@DrCAleaseSmith Yes I've been reading all sorts of second or third hand complaints but only one with any specifics and in that case there was an apology issued. Personally I have had zero issues on mastdn.party. I'm here for a good time and positivity. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

@DrCAleaseSmith

i am on mastodon.social, one of the larger instances and haven't had any negative experiences.

that is not to say that they won't come, but in the weeks that i've been here, it has been very positive for me.

i thank the BIPoC community that came before me. and i am grateful to those here that i've encountered who seem to want to learn.

@DrCAleaseSmith it really really does and one of the Fediverse's biggest challenges is a reputation system so that new users can pick anti-bigoted instances and admins can preemptively isolate and remove bad behavior before it starts and we don't have to continually be posting about it in order to have new people be aware of old misdeeds.
@DrCAleaseSmith the other huge issue is "Schrodinger's Racist": during a big influx of brand new users we have no way of knowing who's who until they post. They have no reputation, they could very well be proven bigots making a new account. They could be vulnerable and marginalized and have PTSD. Only once someone has caused harm can they be identified as a bad actor and removed, so that's at least one harassment incident per racist. We need vetting processes, like signup surveys.
@DrCAleaseSmith above and beyond the good vibes of mindly.social and its admins, those admins also need to be proactively blocking racist servers. Otherwise anyone in the world can see your posts and reply to you, just like if you posted your email address where anyone could find it. Your good experience depends on responsive, anti-racist mindly.social admins who work to keep you safe. Make a relationship with them, see who they are, see if they tend to implement "fediblocks."
@DrCAleaseSmith I'm not on here enough, but I haven't seen anything aimed at anyone, so I hope I never do. BTW you have such a pretty name. ❤️ 😍💐
@DrCAleaseSmith Mindly.social is my #Fediverse home as well, and I too am impressed. Nice to meet you, by the way.
@DrCAleaseSmith I'm on mindly.social too, and it fits in perfectly with exactly how I want to use social media. I haven't once felt enraged, angry, anxious, or jealous since landing here. It feels like a really good place to be an #ally .
@DrCAleaseSmith thanks for sharing your experience here however, your post is precisely what shouldn't be happening for Black people in this space (or any other).
I boosted a post that speaks directly to this issue of Black people having to jump from instance to instance instead of effective moderation being applied.
I appreciate hearing these experiences from BP, especially as I'm one of the newbies but this is not ok.
@DrCAleaseSmith I think it depends on the individual, like everywhere else.
@DrCAleaseSmith Glad you are here and look forward to following and learning from you.
@DrCAleaseSmith
💯 Actively moderated servers make such a big impact. When your admins move quickly to silence or block servers giving refuge to bigots, it creates such a different experience.
