Horrified to see that Bargain Chemist is selling fucking colloidal silver ("immune support").

If you know anyone taking this worthless shit that can turn you blue/grey permanently, please tell them about argyria and maybe take a look at this classic web site and sad story: https://www.rosemaryjacobs.com/
Rosemary Jacob's argyria introduction page

Ingesting silver in an form or parical size is at best usless and at worst harmful. It can turn you permanently gray.

I'm surprised this is even legal in New Zealand.
@stephen ppl take it orally????
I think this is the stuff used on my baby when wee to shrivel up a super-outy tummy button….
@chillbetty @stephen That might have been silver nitrate - I remember having that for a wart when I was little.
@stephen It beggars belief!
@booblesshilda the fact it's been discredited for so long and yet it still has a market blows my mind.

I see it as a sign that US brainworms are spreading. I noticed our local antivax crew were pushing it here earlier this year.

@stephen

Pharmacies in NZ have been full of snake oil products for at least 20 years.

@wavicle longer. As long as I can remember (and I'm 52). Still, this shit is actively harmful in a way that (eg) homeopathic products aren't, and I've not seen it sold before.
@stephen see also urine bathers, almond kernel eaters, bicarb water drinkers and black salve appliers. It's frightening that people have such poor critical thinking skills.

@stephen 'In searching that literature for thirty years I have never found any evidence that silver in a person's body benefits anyone other than the quack who sold it.'

I've seen plenty of people recommend the stuff in dog groups, as well. At least most dogs' skin is already grey! Not sure what other health problems are associated with argyria though.

@SupergoofNZ my theory: quack remedies are more common in the US, because their health system is so unaffordable. Comes up in pet care here, because there's no public health system for pets.
@stephen Thanks for this. I've taken colloidal silver a few times in the past - never for long - and had no idea about argyria. #HealthWarning #SideEffects #ColloidalSilver #Argyria
@jerseysugar wow! Nothing that came with it that warns about too much?

@stephen For a while, a couple of years back, a chemist I walk past had two big displays in their window - one advertising turmeric capsules and one advertising apple cider vinegar.

One evening, shortly after I first saw it, I washed down a chicken tikka masala with a couple of stubbies of Rochdale. Don't know how much good it did my health, but it tasted good.

@stephen Waiting for them to turn blue
