Any #weightlifting nerds here in the #fediverse have favorite home gym equipment they’d like to share? I’m contemplating building out something for myself. I’m an experienced lifter at this point, so I know brands and products from time in gyms, but I’ve never owned any myself. Curious what secret faves and diamonds in the ruff exist that I should check out. I’m looking hard at ForceUSA for rack + accessories and bar, REP for plates and bench. 🤔

@joshwithouthats owned a warehouse gym and headed a powerlifting team for the better part of a decade.

Simple racks that don’t have too many bells or whistles are best. I ended up outfitting my entire gym with the most basic rogue racks - the available attachments for them are great too so you can build out a very versatile piece over time.

I’d invest most in a solid barbell. It’s the thing you’ll be in contact with the most.

Have you ended up buying anything yet?

@doomcruiser Thanks for the info! I have not purchased anything, yet, but I’ve got like three carts of things so far 😅 I have space constraints, so I’ve been looking at ForceUSA’s folding MyRack + accessories (dip bar, spotter bars), American for barbell and rubber bumper plates (to protect floor and less noise), and REP Fitness for bench, wall hanger for bench, and wall mounted weight plate pegs for storage. Someone recommended York, too, but haven’t explored them yet.

@joshwithouthats np! Just checked out the rack and it looks great. Specs are exactly like rogues and a great price there.
I’d personally stay away from York.. their OG 70’s stuff was legendary but the new stuff never held up for us.

All of the other stuff seems like it’ll be solid and last. You’re going to have an awesome set up.
For floor protection I’d look into horse stall mats. They’re like 1/5th the price of any gym mats and are incredible for protection

@joshwithouthats 3/8th inch 4x6 mats from Tractor Supply literally saved me thousands of dollars and who knows how much in floor damage.
Oh and obviously enjoy the fuck out of being able to use chalk without having to hide it haha. One of the many beauties of a home set up.
@doomcruiser You’re the second person this week to turn me onto the horse stall mats. I had no idea about those, so I definitely will be pricing those out! Thanks for all the feedback. It’ll take a bit to build it all up (bc sweet jeebus $$$ lol), but I’m excited to get to more easily work out between meetings and generally supplement my main gym program with other movements I like at home!
