Hi tooters! I need some advice. I would like recommendations for a 2 person board game that is non-competitive against each other and doesn't have a rule set that takes a month to learn. Any thoughts?
#boardgames
@SamanthaJaneSmith I recently started playing the Stardew Valley board game, it is a co-op game so that might fit the bill, it is really fun.
@sitton76 thanks for the recommendation. I took a look, is there a board game version?
@sitton76 @SamanthaJaneSmith I tried out the Stardew Valley board game recently, and it can actually take quite a while to learn all the rules, because each possible location has a completely different set, and there are like a dozen different locations.
@mwt @sitton76 good to know. My partner is dubious about board games so I need an easy but fun introduction.
@SamanthaJaneSmith Onirim is 1-2 player coop. Any of the Forbidden games (Forbidden Island, Desert, or Sky), I think they all go up to five players. Maybe Sub Terra (up to 6), Flash Point (up to 6), or Hotshots (up to 4). I think Castle Panic / Star Trek Panic /Zombie Panic might not be too bad on rules either (up to 6). Maybe Samurai Spirit as well (up to 7).
@mwt thank you! Will take a look

@SamanthaJaneSmith Non competitive against each other covers a lot of ground. Many of the co-ops would work (especially something like Pandemic: Hot Zone), or there are things where there's not much interaction and you are doing your own thing without impacting your opponent much, which is the domain of roll and writes or flip and writes. Cartographers is great, or things like Rolling Realms or Railroad Ink (30 Rails is a good *free* alternative)

Sagrada and any of the Ganz Schรถn Clever range would work too, or Kingdomino/Azul if potentially hate drafting doesn't stretch the non competitive rule too much.

For something a little different you have Dimension or Drop It.

Any of those have a pretty light rules load (the Ganz Schรถn Clever is probably the trickiest).

@Brett thanks, I need a game where we work together.
@SamanthaJaneSmith I forgot Fox in the Forest (either original or duet), a two player cooperative card game. The Crew would probably work too.
@SamanthaJaneSmith Horrified is a fun co-op game where you work together to defeat classic movie monsters. It offers nice variety since you can mix different villains each time, or you can add more monsters to increase the challenge.
@brentnichols thanks for the recommendation
@SamanthaJaneSmith Assuming cooperative games? MicroMacro: Crime City (and it's sequels) are easy to teach as it's like a crime solving Where's Wally (or Waldo depending on your country) https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/318977/micromacro-crime-city

@SamanthaJaneSmith For fairly easy noncompetitive co-operative for 2, I'd recommend either The Crew (we prefer the Deep Sea Mission to the original and use the 2 player variant) or The Game by Steffen Benedorf. As well, there's The Fox in the Forest Duet (the original is competitive, Duet is co-operative). We also enjoy Horrified with 2 players.
@Annabananaz thank you. I have heard good things about fox on the forest.
@Annabananaz @SamanthaJaneSmith Everyone saying "Duet" reminds me of Codenames Duet, which is a coop and is quite fun if you like word-based games. Also easy to learn.
@SamanthaJaneSmith you cooperate in this to fend off colonisers, and if your partner dislikes, it can be played with one person https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/162886/spirit-island
Spirit Island

Island Spirits join forces using elemental powers to defend their home from invaders.

@OntologicalQ @SamanthaJaneSmith Spirit Island is an awesome game. However, it is definitely not rules-lite. On the other other hand, when I first bought it, I figured I'd play it solo if no one else liked it.
@mwt @OntologicalQ Thanks, I need to start with a light rule set as my partner has an aversion to following any rules. ๐Ÿ˜
@SamanthaJaneSmith @mwt @OntologicalQ Spirit Island is really not light tbh. It is a good game but I wouldn't start with this one.
@SamanthaJaneSmith although typically a competitive board game, #Carcassonne has official solo and co-op rules. Itโ€™s a tile based medieval civilisation building game
@shanebattye thanks I will take a look
@SamanthaJaneSmith what a great question - I will be interested to read your replies! My husband and I particularly like Dรฉcorum which I think would fit the bill for you. We also enjoy Roll for Adventure. Both of those are fully cooperative games. Iโ€™d also recommend Patchwork. You play against each other, but your main focus is on building your own board rather than trying to beat the other player, if that makes sense.
@Artoo thanks for the recommendations!
@SamanthaJaneSmith Pandemic Legacy is a classic coop game that supports two players. Rules video here - https://vimeo.com/152144791?embedded=true&source=video_title&owner=7709867

@iain thanks. I believe I played one of the pandemic games previously. I will take a look.
@SamanthaJaneSmith Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is excellent if you're a bit more literary
@iain I would like this I am sure but my partner has an aversion to Sherlock Holmes....๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
@SamanthaJaneSmith I can understand that. Benedict Cucumberpatch is very annoying.
Similar games with different themes are "Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game" and Vienna Connection. Haven't played them but heard really good things.
@iain Tbh I preferred the Elementary series set in NY but the only detective type series my other half likes are the Nordic noir. So bit loath to suggest detective games.
@SamanthaJaneSmith Tranquility, itโ€™s a patience like game where you place tiles in turns, itโ€™s gorgeous and itโ€™s super chill.
Sprawlopolis, which is city building. More of a challenge but still working together
@Clare I just read the advert to Tranquility. It says the only way to play is in silence... Do they supply a way to keep the other person quiet? I have yet to find away to stop my partner from chatting.... Love her really.
@SamanthaJaneSmith my partner may have a similar problem with me. We either limit talking to narrating what we are doing or chatting about other things. Just not talking about game tactics.
@SamanthaJaneSmith there's a great game called One Key that works beautifully at 2. One of you is giving clues and the other is verbally explaining what they mean to them so the clue giver can give better clues.. it's all about explaining and listening well... works well in a group too. I recommend this at the #boardgamecafe I work at for couples all the time who want to work together. Also check out Escape the Dark Castle or the Unlock! games... the latter is a set of escape rooms in a box.
@wizard thank you, I will check them out.

@SamanthaJaneSmith cooperative scrabble. You can't talk about your rack. At the end, you will add your scores and see if you can beat your best score.

Totally changes the dynamic from "block progress" to "be helpful"

@scottnicholson S rabble! Ah brings back days of family arguments at Xmas! ๐Ÿ˜‚
@SamanthaJaneSmith Forbidden Island ๐Ÿ™‚
@SamanthaJaneSmith Pandemic, Forbidden Desert, etc. These are excellent games.
