"Long-termism is an indulgence of rich world intellectuals, no matter how genuinely altruistic they are...The mistake MacAskill makes is to conflate long-termism and effective altruism. They might overlap, but they are two different ideas."

"At this stage in India’s development, effective altruism offers an thoughtful framework for corporate and individual social responsibility. We need more ideas, fresh thinking, innovative approaches and new money to enter the social sector. If our wealth generators are inspired to give a fraction of their earnings to well-considered altruistic causes, India as a whole will be better off."

@nitin Not by funds, finance or material alone, can education evolve. Lessons from evolutionary biology, of the Elisabet Sartouhris kind; from Team Human from the Douglas Rushkoff portals and critical thinking on the Sapiens strand from Yuval Harari and the Atman texts from Upanishadic traditions by HG Narahari of the Theosophical Society required deep consciousness of mind, body and emotion integration.
@jgblr Can’t disagree at all!

@nitin Very thoughtful article! Helps one understand two ideas that are often found being used interchangeably. Thank you!

There are many causes claiming to do social good within India. However, which of them is a *well-considered* one, is the struggle that I often find myself in.

Typically the concern is whether the funds will be used right. However, for a lay-person like me another equally difficult question is: is this cause going to actually benefit the country in the longer run?

@nitin I am always leery of long-term plans that benefit the rich elite more than anyone else.

The "Great Man" Theory of History belongs on the trash heap of history.
