#Introduction: I’m a software engineer at #Microsoft since interning back in ’98. Currently Engineering Director working on #VisualStudio.

I have a rotation of hobbies I get into pretty obsessively: #guitar, #woodworking, #programming. I love the process of getting good at something even though I haven't come close to pulling it off. Also dabble with digital art, recording music, and 3d-printing.

Finally, my wife (also at MSFT) and I have two teenage daughters and an awesome dog, Rudy.

@gusper Hey Gus! Good to meet you. How did you get into woodworking?
@nathan Hi Nate! I think it was a Steve Ramsey YouTube video that got me interested. Ended up being a fun thing to learn/do that got me to spend less time staring at a screen. :)
@gusper I will have to check it out. I’d love to be able to do some basic stuff.
@gusper i only have one question. Why is it so hard to find a career in programming if you dont have a degree? Every job listing i have seen requires minimum associates in computer science or bachelors in computer science. especially in the US. What about those of us who are self taught? I, myself, may not know everything, but I have been learning since 2001 and I simply don't know why I even try anymore.

@TheRandomCrafter83 Hi, Carl. At least for my team and others I work with, we almost always add something along the lines of "or equivalent experience" to the degree requirements. I wouldn't consider it a dealbreaker at all.

That said, I get that doesn't match your experience. Keep your head up though, and don't give up. Find an open-source project you're passionate about and start contributing to it. Coding with others leads to lots of learning and experience. Might lead to opportunities too.

@gusper welcome to the fediverse. :-)

@gusper Welcome to Mastodon!

I've been using VS since about 1998, thanks for the all the hard work.

@mrjking Thanks! Good to hear it's been useful for you!
