Your notes are a form of personal currency.

Leaving these notes in an #app that doesn't give you control over your data is like leaving money—that's not backed by precious metals—in the bank.

Both could be frozen, or disappear, at any moment. No, that's not scaremongering. If you think locked-in notes data and #CBDC sound awesome, I'd invite you to explore the definition of true #freedom.

If you must use a locked-in app, you'd better have a robust #backup system in place. #obsidian

@ellane Caution with valuables is always warranted! I try to think in terms of risk. Some risks are small, with loss resulting in inconvenience or minor frustration. Some are huge, and I try to act accordingly.

But I also keep convenience and benefit in mind. These factors, all considered, help me make what I hope are smarter decisions around tech and note making.

@markmcelroy @ellane check out @TiddlyWiki ... your data, you own it and control it and access to it.

@ellane When dealing with lots of #backup , it's worthy to make use of deduplication software like #FSlint .

If you don't use it yet, learn about it here: https://techhub.social/@andersbateva/109512354401832073

#Linux Do you already know #FSlint, a free file deduplicator? It can sure make your life easier when it comes to managing all your files and #backup . Learn about it: https://komputilo.blogs.sapo.pt/fslint-deduplicador-de-arquivos-para-31169

@ellane @ianbetteridge I went from Drafts iOS (& Mac) to Obsidian (via Bear because there didn't seem a direct route to export hundreds of notes as markdown).

Notes synced in an iCloud folder, its contents saved to a private GitHub repository every ≈4 days by an iOS Shortcut*. Not exactly a robust backup but it's better than what I had.

*I tried an automation but it's not possible to unlock my phone to run unattended - or I haven't figured a workaround to make it so.

@bazbt3 So you don't use @drafts anymore? #Obsidian is my main driver, but Drafts is the entry point that gets most notes where they need to go. Obsidian takes aaaages to startup on my phone, while Drafts is instant. A quick action appends text to my daily note in Obsidian.

@ellane Correct, despite the wrench of years of use I dropped it entirely.

I made a quick entry button on my iPhone home screen using the Shortcuts app. It accepts freeform text then saves a note with a filename like a daily note but appended with a time stamp. It then opens the note ready for further editing.

Now I appreciate not everyone has the inclination to mess about like me when there's a more obvious solution *right there* in @drafts actions. :)

@ellane @bazbt3 @drafts I know this is an old post.

Recently I moved from Drafts & Obsidian combo to #noteplan .

Since you are in Apple ecosystem, you might also like #setapp . You can find noteplan within setapp.

Noteplan starts fast, interoperable with Obsidian, works with iCloud ...

Checking out #NotePlan . What I like? • file over app concept; local files in markdown format ⇒ files are under my control even thought app might go out of biz • It it interoperable with @[email protected] . I can use both together, if I want. How nice! • It even supports the same format for linking t...

@jjude Thankyou. I stopped using Obsidian a while ago and like @ellane decided to go a different route - Devonthink and Devonthink to go in *my* case.

No matter how many times I tried to work with Obsidian in iCloud I couldn't ever get over the frequent ridiculous wait times as the vaults indexed. I tried the self-hosted route and gained speed but by that time it'd lost its spark.

Going to bookmark this from you in case I feel like doing something silly again. :)
