@blaine @lzg I’m new here. Perhaps you can help me understand something. There seem to be two competing recommendations for fedinewbs:

- “It doesn’t matter which instance you join.”
- “[…] this is what small, intentional instances should be for.”

Which is more true?

@com @lzg I think the current model is a little broken, tbh. "Both things are true", so:

- We'll likely have more than one instance (just like most people have multiple email addresses); having different contexts is a useful tool!

- Most communities will be like mailing lists, that you can join without creating a new identity.

Things aren't quite like that yet, but we'll get there (or maybe it'll look different! We're all learning here ❤️). Hope that helps in the meantime!

@lzg @blaine Sounds true. I’m trying to be patient, to allow the fediverse to congeal naturally without imposing my preconceptions.

I’ve self-hosted my email since 1999 and that seems best for mastodon too, a priori.

In the meantime, I created a secondary account at infosec.exchange so I can swim in its local feed. Most of my Twitter peeps moved there.
