Third time this year that I've had to rearrange my shelves. Made a selection for a mini street library (now all I need is a shelving unit that can stand the weather)

The Six Stages of Having Too Many Books

Vi-An Nguyen humorously imagines the different—and exceedingly intricate—ways of organizing books once you have far too many.

@fifischwarz @bookstodon i've gone digital so this is no longer a concern😁I give away old books when the digital edition comes out.

That makes sense. I do start out with e-books and lending at the library - and http://www.archive.org (which is an excellent source, by the way). My problem is that if I really like a book, I want to have the printed edition. ☺️

@fifischwarz @brainpilgrim @bookstodon I'm definitely the same way, I'll sometimes I'll read a book from the library and it's just too good not own, especially when I know it's something I want to add to my re-reading list. Yiyvn Li says that "A first reading is only a first encounter, and if a book doesn't move me into rereading, it remains a mere acquaintance instead of a conversational partner."
@duanetoops @fifischwarz @brainpilgrim @bookstodon love that quote! The best books are the ones where I'm still noticing new things on the 3rd or 4th read (the 2nd read is usually where I notice the foreshadowing & in-jokes)
@pengaled @fifischwarz @brainpilgrim @bookstodon I know right! Every text that changes us; every book that awakens and enlivens some sleeping space within ourselves, has the capacity to change us again and to awaken us once more.
@fifischwarz @bookstodon @duanetoops @pengaled i'm sure we don't keep a book unless we're planning to read it again. So having this dilemma is about how many great books there are.
@brainpilgrim @fifischwarz @bookstodon @duanetoops @pengaled I keep books I loved reading, I don’t have any real plan to read them again. I might, someday in the far off future when I have time. For me, keeping a book on my shelf is a reminder that it resonated with me on a level other books couldn’t.
@kansaskrid @brainpilgrim @fifischwarz @bookstodon @pengaled love that! The sign posts and mile markers of our growth, progression, and change.
@duanetoops @kansaskrid @brainpilgrim @bookstodon @pengaled So true! Now I almost regret having gotten rid of some titles that bothered me at the time. Fortunately, I still remember them and acknowledge that they, too, shaped me. In the meantime, I'm happy that their place on the shelf is now occupied by books that I cherish.

I regret letting go of Mother Night by #Vonnegut. I keep looking for a copy of it in used book stores. I do want to reread it. See if it still grabs me the way I remember.

(Hope I did not crush the eureka moment in browsing bookstores there)
