Hello World! Here's my #introduction (Part 1). I live in #Oregon and was born and raised in rural #Alaska. I'm a professional #artist, #falconer, amateur #astronomer, freelance #writer, and #neuroscience #student. I study how adverse childhood experiences affect #spatialnavigation in the #hippocampus. I'm also a #disability rights advocate, working to increase accessibility for disabled college students.

#Intro (Part 2). I'm #autistic and hard of hearing. I battle #trigeminalneuralgia, #HidradenitisSuppurativa, #MénièresDisease, #rheumatoidarthritis, #CPTSD, #EDS, and #erythromelalgia. I'm a multiple #TBI and #sepsis Survivor. Despite my agony, my urge to photograph, study, and narrate the world around me continues to be my driving force.

I love #StarTrek, #Physics, #Botany, #Cosmology, #astrophysics, #Reading, and hot baths.

@HannahCrazyhawk What is adverse childhood experience? I would think I have good #spatialnavigation? Discuss?
@peterdeppisch Part 1: Hi, thank you for asking! I'll explain more below. The studies may be #triggering. The reason I study childhood trauma and navigation is because I experienced a tremendous amount of abuse and neglect as a child and I suffer from many #illnesses and conditions, including severe impairments in #navigation. I want to help others who suffer.
@peterdeppisch Part 2: There is a study called the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study conducted by CDC-Kaiser Permanente. The study examines different types of abuse a child can experience during critical developmental periods before they turn eighteen. The ACE Study measures the correlation between high levels of #childhoodtrauma and poor future physical and #mentalhealth conditions. I've linked a helpful article about the study here:

Take The ACE Quiz β€” And Learn What It Does And Doesn't Mean

First developed in the 1990s, the 10 questions of the Adverse Childhood Experiences test are designed to take a rough measure of a difficult childhood. Finding out your score is easy. Now what?

@peterdeppisch Part 3: During childhood, the brain is much more sensitive to trauma. That trauma can leave a legacy of pain and grief in life. Childhood trauma changes brain development (it can shrink the hippocampal volume by 15-18%). Here's a link to a more in-depth study on this about women with childhood trauma: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3230324/#:~:text=The%20depressed%20subjects%20with%20childhood,volume%20than%20the%20healthy%20subjects.
Childhood Trauma Associated With Smaller Hippocampal Volume in Women With Major Depression

Smaller hippocampal volume has been reported only in some but not all studies of unipolar major depressive disorder. Severe stress early in life has also been associated with smaller hippocampal volume and with persistent changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal ...

@peterdeppisch Part 4: The hippocampus is where much of #navigation takes place. The research being conducted on spatial learning, #cognitive mapping, and disorders that can arise is on the cutting edge of neuroscience. We know many things about the different cells responsible for various aspects of navigation, but we don't completely understand their neural symphonies. We want to understand their interconnectivity.
@peterdeppisch Part 5: I especially want to understand where, how, and why things can go wrong with someone's cognitive map and the interrelationships with trauma, memory, and #dissociativedisorders that can arise.

@peterdeppisch
Part 6: I'm fascinated by the #resilience and the brain's ability to change itself. Many have immense trauma, but their brains have developed ingenious ways to cope and #survive that horror. Here's the video by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris that altered the course of my college career forever: https://youtu.be/95ovIJ3dsNk

One of my favorite quotes is by Donna Jackson Nakazawa, "Your biography becomes your biology."

@HannahCrazyhawk I thin we should talk - privately. I could and should write a book.
@HannahCrazyhawk I am on LinkedIn under my name having worked for Bank Of Montreal. I noticed you on LinkedIn. πŸ˜€β€‹ P.S. I am taking the dog for a walk,
