As a public good, “public school is meant to create capable citizens who possess the practical skills necessary to participate in democracy.”

#PublicEducation advocates need to understand the fundamental ideological disagreement they have with school choice proponents.

Our current moment is decades in the making. If you're passionate about public education, there's no more time for tiptoeing around. https://medium.com/age-of-awareness/the-fight-over-parents-rights-in-schools-misses-the-point-of-public-education-3640888bf744

The Fight Over Parents’ Rights in Schools Misses the Point of Public Education

The current breathless and apoplectic fury over parents’ rights is deeply familiar. In the vitriol spewed at school board meetings and the talking points dripping from the mouths of TV’s talking…

@JoelN @edutooters No matter how you try to package it, saying you're better studied to mold children's minds than their parents is a losing rhetorical proposition. Then again, tone deaf elitists prefer bullying and compulsion to discourse with the common man.

@dryerlint @JoelN @edutooters

Yes! While we are at it who are those elitist doctors to think they are better at guiding the health of my body than I am or my mechanic thinking they know better than me, the driver of my own car. Power to the common man! Down with expertise!

In all seriousness parents are not educators and educators are not parents. Parents know their child best and educators have the training to supplement parents to give children the skills they need. It's a partnership.

@teachertiger @JoelN @edutooters Math teachers aren't mathematicians, nor are history teachers historians. They are 22 year old bachelors degree holders who took a half dozen classes on pedagogy.

Most parents aren't trying to teach their children everything either. They just want the contents to be true. Such as knowing basic biology.

And while we're at it, do whatever you want to your own body. Just don't murder your own child. That body is theirs.

@dryerlint @teachertiger @JoelN @edutooters maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but there are a lot of teachers who are -actually- historians and mathematicians and many more who have done ongoing training to learn more about which Pedagogies fit their personal style - I have an M.Ed that is focused arou d experiential pedagogy (Dewey rocks), for instance
@mbingley @dryerlint @teachertiger @JoelN @edutooters interesting thread here. I would add that, as an #Educator that came from industry and have been largely following my instincts with respect to pedagogy per se, I have only just begun to figure out how to teach teenagers. Content experts do enter the profession, though I imagine most #teachers are recent college grads just barely able to understand pedagogy themselves.
