I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon.

It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.

It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.

Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.

@leo  https://twit.tv/clubtwit would be a good start as you get a lot in return for some 💸

@danvanmoll @leo I mean club twit. It seems like a subscription site if I want to see anything.

Which is fine, really. Just be honest.

@olavf @leo twit.social is the instance belonging to Club Twit. You subscribe on Club Twit, get commercial free podcasts, access to a pretty cool Discord etc. but most of all you support TWiT.tv. I’m not sure if you currently need to be a Club Twit member to register on the instance.
@danvanmoll @leo you have to $ubscribe, which again I'm 100% okay with, just be up front about it.
@olavf @leo as I said, I wasn’t sure. When I joined a sub wasn’t necessary (even though I already was a subscriber). It probably was changed in order to not overload the server. However, twit.social is directed to people listening to the twit.tv podcasts.

@danvanmoll @leo twit.social is the federated gateway to twit.tv and that's perfectly okay. And content creators that want to move their profiles there is okay too. But ultimately that content is pay per view and that's okay too.

Just be honest ~ hey we've got this awesome platform service that you can monetize your works

Again, that's okay. Just be honest.

@olavf @leo Would you please stop that”just be honest”-nonsense? I’m not hiding anything, you just don’t seem to understand.

twit.tv is a collection of podcast shows founded by Leo Laporte & team something like 16 years ago. All podcasts are free, supported via ad breaks. Other podcasts use e.g Patreon to ask their audience for support, Leo has Club Twit. In return you get access to a private Discord, ad-free versions of all podcasts - and (recently) access to twit.social.

@danvanmoll it's more likely they are geared towards content creators but love consumers. Consumers are profit, no matter where they are

And consider this ~ they've schooled you, and maybe me. Here we are talking about a for-profit federated instance with an open front. They're not being honest; they want you there to get you to $ubscribe, It's not your fault as this wil be common for the next 6+ months

@leo I thought you could make being a member of Club TWiT a part of the verification process. That way you get your $8 verification.
@rtfm @leo I'm surprised that this wasn't already in place.

@leo Are you going to set up donations or tip-jar for the twit.social instance in future?

Would be helpful for those of us that want to contribute but are anxiously waiting to see if Santa brings a Club TWiT subscription this year...

@leo okay I found my first real need for a quote toot. Feels weird to do this in replies but @andresmh is there any way to support the HCI.social server directly?
@andresmh @leo @Gillian You can include a link to a post in another post, and a client app could choose to unfold the contents of that link…
@andresmh @Gillian @leo you can boost your reply and it will essentially be the same as a QT with the benefit that it will lead people back to the conversation with the original poster.
@Gillian @leo @andresmh It may feel weird for a while, but you will get used to it. I fully support Eugen's decision to disallow "quote toots". They would be as toxic as quote tweets.
@Gillian @leo @andresmh Note that nothing prevents you from copying the link to a toot from the … menu and pasting it into a new toot.
@leo Hmmm. Can we @ some of the admins here and boost it?

@leo dot-social and which other?

tbf throwing money at dot-social *does* finance the busiest instance, and dev to keep that site up should ripple back into smaller instances being able to run better/more cheaply.

But if you aren't on one of those big two instances, definitely worth checking if your own instance needs the money first :)

@ian

If anything, the money provides the main dev to do as he wish as opposed to work with the community.

The day Eugen will have to get another job (and mastodon.social disappear) we will finally have a chance to get good governance.

The money absolutey does not trickle down into benefits for instance owners and most of the improvement comes from the community.

Give money to tusky/metatext if you want to do something useful for everyone

@leo

@mxfraud @leo Last I checked, Eugen still contributes a significant amount to the software itself. I agree that Tusky and Metatext are preferable mobile clients, so definitely donate to them, but there are some pluses to 4.0. And having an instance 10-100x larger than the one I'm on means any scaling issues we have will be solved problems by the time we get to them.
@ian @mxfraud @leo For us non-techies: are Tusky and Metadata under-the-hood tech, or something we see and use directly, like an instance? Most of us on mobile can’t even find where to donate to anyone.

@dudleysaunders @mxfraud @leo Tusky and Metatext are mobile apps used to interact with an(y) instance. If you like the UI they provide more than the default website/apps and want more where that came from, they're a solid place to donate.

For under-the-hood stuff, other than Mastodon's GmBH donating to instance admins is almost certainly the biggest need, on average.

@leo i support both @mastodon and my instance
@leo I'd say if you are able and want to donate, maybe split your donation between the devs and your local host. The $1 per month plan for the devs seems like more of a tip / pat on the back for them to keep up the good work. Then maybe see if your host has a donation page and kick them as much as you wish, maybe $5 (cup of coffee) per month seems reasonable. A nice 1:5 ratio for devs to host, increase the amounts as you see fit.
@leo It's wild that the decentralization is the part that people can't wrap their heads around. Like what do you MEAN there's no Mastodon, Inc.? How can that be?
@leo for those on MSTDN.SOCIAL go to @stux Patreon: www.patreon.com/MSTDN
@leo that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t donate to the Mastodon team though. As long as Mastodon development is happening, and your instance is actively being updated by your administrators, then the donations you provide can help

And even if your admin doesn’t update the instance all the time, your donations will still help the development of the app, which is developed separately from your instance as just a viewer

@leo I like your post, but, there's actually an officially registered Mastodon company, and the lead developer of Mastodon is its CEO. :D

But I get what you mean.

@sindastra @leo it's a gGmbH - the leading "g" means "gemeinnĂźtzig" aka non-profit. For more information see here: https://www.firma.de/en/company-formation/the-ggmbh-what-is-the-german-non-profit-limited-liability-company/

@leo I happen to be one of the few (many?) on Mastodon.social that is hosted by @Gargron so two birds, one stone for me

You *should* be able to find your server host by looking here (on the web interface). Hope that helps someone. :)

@leo @elicitizen Indeed. Although donations going to @Mastodon team enable further development, which is open source and benefits all servers / instances. Case in point: https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/109356239312833647
@leo How do I find the place to donate for my instance?
@wookiecat @leo if you open a web browser, and go to the instance URL /about - you should find the info 🙂
@wookiecat @leo
Go to the "about"-site of your instance: https://climatejustice.social/about
There find out, who is the admin and follow her/him. Maybe she/he has tooted something about this topic. If not: Just ask him/her.

@kaktus @leo yes thank you a few people sent it to me and I already emailed them. If I don’t get a reply I will try again. I believe in supporting people who support the rest of us.
@leo I’d happily add a bit extra to my twit club monthly to go towards twit.social - could there be another tier of membership?
@leo I'm donating to both open collective and my admin's Kofi account
@leo Totally agree -- I have done this myself . Also -- follow your mod. They're the one tooting about outages and the like. And they'll have something on their profile or somewhere about how to support your instance.
@leo Yesss!
Especially this Atomicpoet guy has been spreading severe misinformation about 'Mastodon’s survival is at stake': https://chaos.social/@frumble/109368049465410897
Maxi 5x 💉 (@[email protected])

@[email protected] Guy, you talk like Eugen is developing all this by himself. Mastodon is a community project with lots and LOTS of merge requests. I will explain this in simple language for you: Other developers develop features and bug corrections and submit their code to the project leader, who is accepting it, after the wider developer community of hobbyists has discussed about the technicalities. You don’t need millions to *develop* Mastodon.

chaos.social
@leo good point, how does it scale cost wise i can imagine if you where running an instance on cloud the costs good be greatly increased by a massive increase in users.

@leo As a server admin, I feel that supporting the development effort does support my own server. Just because the dollars don’t trickle down, doesn’t mean that we don’t benefit in other ways, through well-maintained code, not to mention access to the developers through Discord (not to mention supporting two of the largest instances, which are bound to uncover bugs and security gaps before my instance does).

I get what you’re saying, but some may interpret your message as discouraging people from participating in the “official” Patreon.

@frumble Perhaps @atomicpoet was being a little hyperbolic when he said that Mastodon’s “very survival” is at stake, but I don’t think it rises to the level of “misinformation.” He was just pointing out that it costs real money to maintain code and servers, and it’s incumbent upon those who can, to at least consider putting a few bucks toward that effort. If nothing else, it honors those who’ve put a lot more hours into building this community as well as its infrastructure, than any of us ever will.

[edit]
One last point: I’m not saying that people shouldn’t support their local server; quite the contrary, but for those of use who are running servers (even if we’re doing it out of our own pockets), you might consider sending a few bucks their way, in the same way that you might pay a monthly subscription fee for other pieces of software.

It’s just important to recognize that free software and services aren’t free; somebody’s paying real dollars and/or real hours of their time. And, as Mastodon (and the Fediverse) grows, the more that we can support the developers and server admins, the better off we’ll be in the long run.

@leo yeah. Here’s my faf.social patreon. jk.

@leo I hear you. I’m so donating to the Patreon for now while I’m on the big Social, but I hope to launch my own instance soon. Or maybe join the Twit social when I re-up my membership soon.
@leo - newbie here... thank you for that info... what about sign in credentials...? does each 'instance' (server?) need its own sign in credentials...? that bit is kind of confusing...
@leo I'm sure that the developers could use the support as well. I've seen an interesting trend with some instances that are quite niche where they work together to try to get folks signed up to sister instances say closer to people geography. Helps with load balancing and probably is better for the whole ecosystem.

@leo thank you. Working had to keep mastodon.education running.

@leo
The development is still an expense for Mastodon
But yes, also support your local hosts. I am just waiting for my local host to set up a Patreon account😉
@leo just contributed to mstdn.social via PayPal, which charged $0.99 international fee. Thoughts on the most efficient way to contribute? PayPal, Patreon, Ko-fi, …
@leo the best way to explain Mastodon is to compare it to a co-op or a Credit Union/Caisse Populaire with no membership fees

@leo I would go so far as to say that no one should give more money to the official Mastodon patreon. Eugen is making close to 6 figures a year and very little of that is reinvested in his Servers aside from monthly bills.

Money will always be better spent on helping small instances pay their bills than putting another drop in the bucket.

@leo many instances are on open collective. https://opencollective.com/search?q=Mastodon
