I realise I should have written an #introduction post so here goes. I’ve been BohemianCoast online for the longest time, and for many years kept that strictly separate from my actual “Alison Scott” identity. I’m a #ScienceFiction fan (of the old school, #fannish type), and #FanArtist (ditto) but have many other interests including #FolkMusic, #concertina and community building. 🧵 oooh thread!
I’m very impressed by what I see so far of the Fediverse because it has loads of features that remind me of the early days of the general-use internet, which I miss, and offers a real hope that we – everyone, not just the ubernerds – might start to control our own use of online spaces. /fin
@bohemiancoast - this, exactly. I was looking at a how-to-run-your-own-server page this morning. Decided it's one step beyond my pay grade, but, y'know. I was quite seriously looking.
@ChazBrenchley I’m happy right now with wandering.shop. I’d prefer in principle, I think, a slightly less writerly and more fannish instance, but it doesn’t exist and I am certainly not going to be the person to build it. Not that I don’t love all my writer pals you understand.
@bohemiancoast - oh aye. I also love it here, hangin' out with all my cohort, tho' I would like to encourage more readers & fans into the Shop. The DIY-instance appeal is more about a backup account, because instances can fold, occasionally without notice. Plus I have a mild yen to host a Book View Cafe account.
@bohemiancoast Hi Allison, fellow #podcast friend! Welcome to the Mastodon place! :)
