It's almost as though oligarchs having unilateral control over our most vital means of communication is not such a great thing after all…
@rbreich I hope that the twitter fiasco brings more people to open-source decentralized alternatives. Not just mastodon, but also others such as Matrix
@rbreich can’t see what possibly could go wrong
@rbreich I used to wonder why revolution always attacked broadcasters first,
It’s much more obvious now social media has opened more eyes.
@rbreich Yes it was also a mistake to build so deeply into a singularly own-able social town square. This feels much better.
@rbreich
Have just joined..as an emergency measure..
@rbreich glad you made the move over.
@rbreich Glad to find you here. Immediate follow of course.
@rbreich a slight quibble: the use of the word “almost”.
I wouldn’t mind if people of integrity did run our communications networks, but these idiots seem to have no discernible skills apart from getting lucky in the first place.
@rbreich Its almost as if wealth does not equal genius.

@rbreich asking out of ignorance but are there any conventions around additional layers of scrutiny and regulation that should be generally apply to private companies operating public utilities and infrastructure?

Of course we are talking about a global community here rather than national infrastructure but in principle it seems like governments and regulators should be playing a bigger role here and responding much faster.

@dannybrowne @rbreich I agree that large corporations should be subject to regulation when said companies products have the potential for great social harm. However; this requires that the regulations themselves be thoughtfull and limited as regards specific harms. Otherwise with communication said regulations could turn into state mandated propaganda and a possible police state in the dystopian sense.
@rbreich it seems Elon Musks goal has been realized. His goal was to build a public place where everyone could come and talk so he drove everyone to Mastadon. Sounds like a true Mission Accomplished to me
yeah except for the fact that everyone fleeing twitter now wants more censorship; not less.
@imaginebeingatcomputers @rbreich no everyone fleeing Twitter wants less nazis and insane right wing zealots. There’s a difference.
@rbreich welcome to freedom from corporate ownership. Not sure why it took so many of us so long to move from the corporate owners to the freedom of federated social interaction. But it is refreshing. #Mastodon
@rbreich The power of openness is being shown here. Tada.
@rbreich says “proletariat uprising now! Seize the means of communication!”
@rbreich it really isn't. We're close to the edge of autocracy

@rbreich
I lived on Twitter on 1/6, watching the insurrectionists live stream themselves.
Where will we get real time news?

I don’t want to know after the fact that our
Speaker of the House’s life was in danger.

@rbreich But isn't it? Many of the people who need to be here most, can't afford a computer. Or dependable transportation to a library. And wow, Robert Reich. I'm gobsmacked by all the well known persons I've seen on this site!
@rbreich I'm happy you're on Mastodon.
@rbreich freedom is not exist, people always want to influense to this world
@rbreich You could say that again, and it would still be true.
@rbreich Exactly!! This feels safer!!
@rbreich
I am so glad you started to call our billionaires oligarchs, because that’s what they are!
@rbreich Good to see you on Mastodon Robert.
@rbreich armed with the “PayPal mafia” which includes Musk and Thiel, the CNP, vestiges of American industrialist fascist attempts to reinstate the gold standard, Koch bro’s, I have always been convinced that libertarianism is astrology for wannabe billionaire tech dudes at the cost of our democracy…Elmo’s bitcoin was the last attempt and it blew up…Dave Troy says it better https://washingtonspectator.org/paranoia-on-parade/

How reactionary grievances have helped bring America’s democracy to the brink of collapse

@rbreich it’s almost as if it was a mistake for communication professionals to adopt a for-profit company’s platform as a vital means of communication.
@rbreich who could have ever seen this coming, Robert Reich?!
@rbreich newspaper barons were an early incarnation as were commercial tv stations. Murdoch and Fox have shown what will happen, nothing new w #twitter
@rbreich who would have thunk :suprisepikachu:
@rbreich Control the media, control the message 😡😡
@rbreich They buy in, thinking they'll have control over a large sector of social conversation... but they are so inept that everyone leaves the party.
@rbreich id like to see Mary Erwin over here - my favorite fembot
