#GoVegan. Die Lösung der durch den russischen Angriff auf die Ukraine ausgelöste #Ernährungskrise liegt eigentlich so nahe: „A plant-based diet could improve the resilience of our food system. Moving to such a diet in the European Union (EU) and United Kingdom (U.K.) alone could replace almost all the production losses from Russia + #Ukraine

Changing our diet would help absorb global food shocks, international study finds

A plant-based diet could improve the resilience of our food system. Moving to such a diet in the European Union (EU) and United Kingdom (U.K.) alone could replace almost all the production losses from Russia and Ukraine. That's what an international team of researchers conclude in Nature Food. Leiden researcher and co-author Paul Behrens: "We are feeding animals crops that we could eat ourselves."

@olewin
reducing the amount of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers will also help to improve the resilience of our food system ✌
And reduces the need for russian gas.
And of course #biodiversity

@aligyie
how do you do organic without synthetic fertilizers nor manure?
@olewin

@bigMouthCommie there are lots of different ways to achieve this. E.g. some plants enrich the soil with nutrutions or you can use compost and char coal (terra preta) or what is pretty hyped right now is working with micro organisms to build up humus (which stores carbon btw) https://risefoundation.eu/soil-protection-and-building-up-organic-matter-humus/

Synthetic fertilizers have not only the problem, that they need lot's of Russian gas and have a huge CO2 footprint, but also have impact on the microorganisms in the soil.
Though, they make plants grow faster, but then they are more vulnerable to pests, which requires more pesticides, which destroys microorganisms in the soil, which increases the need for more fertilizers... there is a reason why organic agriculture is also titled as sustainable agriculture and why e.g. scientists and regulators from EU Comission pour lots of money into it, although there is a huge billion dollar lobby against this.
From scientific perspective, there is no need for synthetic fertilizers in modern agriculture.
