I’m thinking of maybe switching to a different Mastodon instance that isn’t slammed with traffic all the time. Good idea?
@micahflee yeah. I like to feel the community grow but really mastodon.social is more like a nursery we should grow out of and move on to other places.

@micahflee its a partial fix - it'll solve for if your instance is getting slammed (like mastodon.social being the flagship, for example) - but it wont solve for other systems you wish to talk to getting slammed. remote profiles will still load slowly, posting replies to folks may throw errors etc.. so its not a 100% fix

personally im just sticking here cuz im betting these are growing pains and temporary.

@micahflee I have been advocating for a lot of friends to do the same. Not sure how the transition works, though. I heard it can be bumpy.

@longobord @micahflee I did it, and it's not too bumpy at all.

Followers can take a few hours to migrate, especially from instances whose servers are overwhelmed. (Note the key factor here is the instance the *follower* is on, not the instance the migrating user is on.) But they all make it over eventually.

Migrating follows is mostly easy, just export a CSV from old account, import into new account.

Old posts & media don't directly link to your new account but remain on the old instance.

@IntlLawGnome Thanks for the info - I uploaded a small list and now 10 hours later there are still no new Followees there. It's odd that this takes so long
@micahflee From what I’ve heard, the majority of them were slammed today. Probably a good idea to wait on that decision and not base it on performance of the past week.
@micahflee i like infosec.exchange. it's unknown enough that it's not likely to get slammed but popular enough that it won't disappeaer soon.
@bcrypt @micahflee Don't forget that it's run by a CISO so a lot of the biggest messes can be addressed before they become a problem. Plus, he and a great staff are managing server sizing and disk space.
@longobord @bcrypt @micahflee It is one of the top tech instances along with hachyderm.io and fosstodon.org. All have great admin/team structure, well laid out rules and principles, and run by professionals.
@micahflee build your own server 😀
(See my blog in bio for an easy way)
@micahflee in theory it is a good idea. But eventually they may all become busy. I’m more interested in joining (or staying) in one that can scale and react to an increase of traffic and users. I don’t know which one can be, but surely I don’t want to keep moving.
@micahflee Yup. That's how it's all supposed to work - if a node is struggling, new nodes pop up, and you can move your account. We started one for our little city and there are no performance issues.
@micahflee
good move - might want to wait until there is a lull in traffic so the automated follower move operation goes w/o a hitch.
@micahflee
Yes! Kolektiva is holding up well, but getting quite large.
@micahflee there may be some upside, but remember, if your fast server has to communicate with a clogged up instance, you'll be waiting anyway :)

@micahflee I think donating to a specific instance to increase the infrastructure a better idea.
@micahflee Temporary relief. Most instances will suffer this shortly
