If #hashtags are so important on #Mastodon because that is what we can #search, how come hardly anyone uses hashtags? Even posts with highly relevant #technical #terminology or about important #news #topics have few or no hashtags. I’m not talking about posts from #TwitterMigrants or other #newcomers who are still learning, I’m talking about Mastodon #aristocracy #admins and other long timer users.

This is a #question not a #complaint. As you can see, I’m trying. I am making #liberal use of hashtags on the chance someone might someday search, find this post and find #value in it.. Maybe even an #answer if there should be any replies. It is from #altruism; I don’t use #hashtags because I expect any personal #benefits. I already know how to find my post.

My #theory is that typing hashtags is too #burdensome for everyone. It forces you to think about #hashtags and not the #topic or what you want to say. It disrupts chain of thought. Moreover, despite vocal (sometimes condescending) lectures about the Mastodon #culture, using #hashtags is not considered obligatory as a matter of #community #participation in the #Fediverse.

Your thoughts?

@meltedcheese In the brief time I've been here, I've seen lots of hashtags in my feeds. Hashtags being important doesn't mean that you should randomly tag all kinds of words like you did here. This will just clutter the search results when people do use hashtags to search for value. Instead, pick one or two or three that truly describe your post. (And keep in mind that many posts here are of a more personal nature and don't need to be searchable.)
