I need some help! 🚨

Would any of my handful of followers on here like to try beta-testing a new game for me?

It's a word puzzle; you have 100 seconds to find as many words as possible that fit the letters/blanks you are given. As time goes on, there are more words available for you to find.

If you get a chance to play, let me know if anything doesn't work, or looks wrong.

The game has no name yet, but here's the dev server:

Thanks! I appreciate you all testing it out!

I'm super stuck for a name / domain to launch it on. If anyone has any smart ideas, I'd love to hear them. πŸ˜…

@RobOusbey @everywhereist @defaced @martinmeany @HelenTheWalt at the moment the book mark just says "TIGER word puzzle" because that's what I saw first!

@bykimbo Haha - the first puzzle I tested it on was 'SPARK', so I just called it 'the spark puzzle' for a while 😁

Puzzle for Saturday, Oct 1st 2022 | #GameName#

@RobOusbey Letter Fretter πŸ˜‚
@NeuroDrugDoc HAHAHA, that's really good! πŸ˜‚
@RobOusbey thank you ! It is totally great I will probably play it. Could you imagine a version where you could guess not only 5 letters words? 3-5-7-9 could make a nive board (with the right to plural forms to include some of the even count)
I will try think of a name. or make a poll.
@RobOusbey plus, I understand that there is a "one day streak" trend these days, but you could think about getting ride of this limit, no ?
@RobOusbey Coming from the person who made https://thetypingoftheregex.com/ even I'm finding this a little tricky. I'll try again in the morning when I'm feeling a bit more refreshed. πŸ˜‚
The Typing of the RegEX

Do you dare to discover the horrors that await!

@RobOusbey that was fun. Will play again tomorrow with less caffeine. Great game though!

@joehall Thanks!

Highly caffeinated was how I intended it to be played πŸ˜‰

@joehall @RobOusbey JOE WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT
@everywhereist @RobOusbey I honestly think its the timer. It gives me anxiety. When I do my word games I like it to be a chill vibe with a cup of tea and some good tunes. I don't want to defuse a bomb. LOL

@joehall @everywhereist I know what you mean. πŸ˜… I'm a big fan of slow games like Spelling Bee & Wordle.

There are lots of timed games that are "how fast can you complete these?" (eg: the NYT Mini Crossword) but I didn't know of any word games that flip that mechanic to "what can you achieve in a limited time?".

My next game will be slower paced. I promise πŸ˜‰

@RobOusbey what if, on mobile, you didn't have to type the whole word out each time, just the missing letters. Better or worse UX? Maybe you already tried it?

@randfish I think that could be interesting. I did it this way for now to let people swipe full words on their phone keyboard, but I do like the idea of just typing the missing letters - which is more like how crossword apps usually do things.

I'll give it a try!

@RobOusbey @randfish This is the problem I had. I kept trying to type just the missing letters and so I misspelled words because I couldn't stop doing that
@everywhereist @randfish I updated it last night based on this feedback! 😊 Now you just type the missing letters, and it's much faster to get words in.

@RobOusbey @everywhereist @randfish

Funnily enough I just tried it and my only complaint was going to be that I kept trying to write the whole word instead of just the missing letters so I kept making nonsense words. Also sometimes I forgot I had to press enter.

@RobOusbey how fun!! Thanks for sharing this! I played a round and noticed a formatting quirk on mobile πŸ€“

@mattsevits Oops, thanks! This is exactly the kind of broken thing I was hoping people would find.

Looks like I designed it be "responsive as long as you have a big-ass phone." 😬

@RobOusbey oh. i like this a lot. awful first go, but looking forward to next time.
@RobOusbey oh my gosh, this is so fun! I got a little thrown when things disappeared while I was mid guess, but I love iiiiittttttttt.

@RobOusbey Really, really like this Rob! Actually very impressed at myself for getting 25 points on my first try!

Wondering if there's a way of changing the UX around slightly so you know when you're running out of time on each stint a little easier. I found that I was in the middle of typing a word and lost it before sending it because I ran out of time, haha!

That might be just me though.

Love the concept, though! Would be super fun to play daily to get the brain moving!

@RyanJonesSEO Thanks for the feedback! I made an update this morning, so letters will never be removed while you're typing now.
@RobOusbey ouch, my first effort wasn't too good 😊. Looking forward to doing better tomorrow!
@RobOusbey I love the game. The one awkward aspect is when a letter disappears, if you're already typing something it can become a jumbled mess (and wastes time to fix it). Perhaps if someone is typing a word out, wait until the user hits enter to disappear the letter? Also, consider adding a few seconds to the clock whenever someone enters a correct word. That rewards success.
@RobOusbey Have you considered somehow making it time zone sensitive? I played yesterday and hopped on today to try the new game, but it’s not up yet in my time zone.

@nk Good question!

I took a cue from the NYT crossword, which changes over at 7pm Pacific / 10pm Eastern / 3am UK.

I've seen the frustration with daily puzzle games where people want to play more than just once per day, so I'm also planning on launching with a decent number of backdated games in the archive for people to play as well.

@RobOusbey Yes, I played a fair number of the previous games when I hopped on yesterday 😬

@nk Haha, awesome, thank you!!

My other most popular game is https://cloudle.app , which also resets at 10pm ET - in case you're looking for something to do in the meantime! πŸ˜‰

Cloudle: The daily weather guessing puzzle

@RobOusbey a interesting game/concept & no bugs spotted. That said the play ended up feeling stressful to me, so apparently not a good fit for me at the moment.

@RobOusbey

Game is solid/fun!

Some bugs:

Dropping a letter mid-typing is difficult to track. Creates bad entries when typing good words.

On the STAID puzzle, I had ST on the board, and I tried to enter ILL for β€œSTILL”

The T dropped out mid-typing and I wound up with LTIL on the board.

On that note, pressing enter with an incomplete word should clear the board same as when you do a bad entry. manual deleting sucks.

Also, text overlaps when multiple messages appear quickly.

@MrFancyPants Thanks for the feedback.

The v2 of this that I launched last night changed the way answers are entered, and lead to the 'letters disappearing while typing' issue. ( @marvs5 noticed the same thing.)

I'll try to find a way to solve for this today. Probably going to involve only removing the letter right after you submit a word.

Do you have an example of how to get the overlapping messages? I can't recreate it.

@MrFancyPants @marvs5

I made updates based on your notes! πŸ™ Letters now won't disappear while typing (waits until you submit a word), and the messages won't overlap with the score.

@RobOusbey @marvs5

It might have been messages overlapping with score

@RobOusbey Needs more clarity that you need to hit enter to submit the word, and it would be helpful if the target of keyboard input was highlighted. Otherwise, I like it, fun game!

@mattvanhorn Thanks for the feedback! I just made an update that nudges players to hit enter after filling in the letters, until they have a few words under their belt.

When you say "helpful if the target of keyboard input was highlighted", what did you have in mind?

@RobOusbey maybe just highlight the active square a bit. I wasn’t sure at one point If I also had to type the letters that were already there between blanks.
@mattvanhorn Aaah, great idea.
@mattvanhorn Nothing fancy, but I now have a thicker border around the next box that will get typed in. πŸ‘
@RobOusbey That feels much better to me. I will have to check this out on desktop when I get home. But it’s fun on mobile.
@RobOusbey
It was fun. It took me some time to figure out how to submit my word. Maybe having a button underneath that just says submit? But I liked it. Good work!

@zainsyed Thanks for the UI feedback! I just pushed an update that makes the enter button flash a little, once you've filled in the letters.

This hint goes away after you've gotten a couple of words (since I assume the player has the hang of things by then), but hopefully should help people on their first time playing.
