In the last few years I've been getting into #TableTop & #BoardGames. They'll become the focal point of weekend meetups with friends, a special time I spend playing with my daughter, a new connection to my younger brother and a great ice-breaker with new people.

Here's a little 🧵 of my favourite games & recommendations at the moment for anyone looking to take up gaming or expand their collection.

Also, here's a TLDR list of the games below at Zatu: https://www.board-game.co.uk/wish-list/25XWDDAZHO4L/ (I'm not on commission, I just want people to play these games and talk to me about them)

Zatu Games

First up, #Carcassonne.

And why not? It's the GOAT. No matter how many times we play new games, it's the one we always come back to. Easy to learn and although strategy plays a huge part, the randomisation of tiles means newbies can still compete and there are loads of expansions to keep it fresh and interesting.
If you've not played it then wtf u even doing?

#TheQuacksOfQuedlinburg

I bought this because it's frequently in recommendation lists and rightly so. Every round is different and while you're playing against others, you can only directly impact their game in a limited way.
Great push-your-luck / risk vs reward mechanics and has a forgiving complex-looking : easy-to-learn ratio.

#Azul

Beuatiful design and easy to learn, and fascinating to start experimenting with strategies. My wife bought it for me this year and it's been a hit with everyone I've introduced to it.

#Monikers

A fantastic party game when you have a group of 4 or more people in which you have to guess the famous person / meme from a deck that everyone playing helps to build. Round 1 is describing the person for your team to guess, round 2 you can only use one word, round 3 no words (charades).
Always a massive hit and generates a lot of laughter.

#Qwirkle

Kind of like scrabble but with colours & shapes. Fun for adults but easy for kids to learn too. Good, level playing field without hugely complex strategy options, so my 10 year old daughter regularly beats me which is good for family harmony.

#LoveLetter

Super quick rounds and fits in your pocket, great for taking out with you to play around a pub / restaurant table. I have the Batman version which doesn't really change the game play but it's better purely for being about Batman.

Anyway, that's my recommendations, would love to hear yours. My wishlist is ever-growing and I'm often trying out new games on boardgamearena.com, so I'll add to this list every now and then.
Oh finally, an honourable love/hate mention for #CardsAgainstHumanity. I can't think of another game with as steep an enjoyment drop-off, and its content is deeply problematic, but I haven't laughed as much before or since the first round I played with friends. It's lazy, lowest common denominator nonsense, but in the right company & context it can be great fun.
I don't think I'll ever play it again, but I like that I did.
@OneArmedFreddy That's the best/most accurate takes I've come across on CAH!
@BarryCurran What killed it for me was one time we dealt in an extra card at random and it was frequently the best answer. The universe was funnier than us.
@OneArmedFreddy Kingdomino is a lot of fun and a 6 year old picked it up pretty quickly. Obviously Dice Forge, but I wouldn't try that with a small child.
@spad I took Izzy to a board game cafe in Lincoln and suggested we try Dice Forge. I opened the box and took out one piece before I realised how insane that plan was and put it back on the shelf.
@OneArmedFreddy Splendor is our favourite (and TTR - original US map)
