A Parliamentary Congress or a Batshit One? - emptywheel

Few people really understand how such a closely balanced Congress will work.

@emptywheel Worth noting that their are quite a few examples of coalition leadership at a state level - Alaska now and New York under the Republicans + Independent Democrats come to mind
@bobkopp Good point. Do you think that'd work in the House?
@emptywheel No idea - that seems like a @normornstein question!
@normornstein @emptywheel would be very interesting and probably good for democracy to see stories like this at a national level, though: https://www.adn.com/politics/2022/11/12/alaska-senate-makes-plans-for-a-bipartisan-coalition-while-the-house-waits/
Alaska Senate makes plans for a bipartisan coalition while the House waits

Early election results and closed-door discussions point strongly toward a bipartisan Senate majority coalition, while the House is waiting for clearer results.

And NH in 2014. Which was similar, in many ways.
@emptywheel I do have this fantasy about there being enough reasonable Republican representatives to be able to form a coalition (it would only take 3 or 4), that, while they wouldn’t pass the Democratic agenda, would at least do common sense stuff, like fund the government, support Ukraine, keep services running, and pass the kind of bipartisan bills that the senate has occasionally come up with.
@Djteach @emptywheel And here I was thinking that it would be nothing but impeachments and hearings about Hunter Biden. Hope you're right and I'm wrong.
@lisawborden @emptywheel I did say that it was a fantasy. Though as I read that, I think I may need to work on my libido!
@lisawborden @Djteach There was a worldwide threats hearing today and (as far as I listened) it's clear several Republicans are dead set on impeaching Mayorkas.
@emptywheel this is a really good analysis. Sad that finding 3 or 4 moderate republicans in the entire House seems like a reach.
