Periodic reminder: Make fun of horrible people for what they do, not their body or their appearance. Many good, kind, and wonderful people exist who happen to share similar physical features with the horrible person you're mocking.
@JessTheUnstill I also reserve the right to make fun of horrible things done by generally good, kind and wonderful people. Nobody's perfect.
@JessTheUnstill that's really not the incentive people should need for something so basic. Body shaming is always bad, regardless of circumstances.
@JessTheUnstill Well said! To add a touch more detail for anyone reading, that includes mocking of the supposed level of function of anyone's body parts, not just their appearance. The ableism just leaps out sometimes...
@JessTheUnstill Absolutely!
@JustRosy @JessTheUnstill completely agree. However, it takes a lot more work and effort because if your mockery is smart the masses may not get it.
@last_octet @JessTheUnstill Some people are stupid, others aren't. Can't be helped, in the end.

@JessTheUnstill

I try to remember, "attack ideas, not people".

@plasma4045 @JessTheUnstill It’s not only the right thing to do from the point of view of kindness, it also makes your argument a lot stronger. If your argument ends up sounding like β€œI like this guy for president because he looks better,” it sounds pretty stupid.

@JessTheUnstill People are always like, "But no, see, that's what he's most SENSITIVE about!"

He ain't gonna see your post. Your fat/bald/skinny/hairy/whatever friends are.

@JessTheUnstill the lack of empathy can be due to a neurologic dysfunction. They didn't choose it, like we don't choose our body. I don't think it's good to make fun on them.
@JessTheUnstill It also makes it look like you don't have any legitimate criticism if petty insults are the best you can do.
@JessTheUnstill so true! No body/appearance shaming. Just tell the assholes that they are assholes. 😊

@JessTheUnstill
Mood. It's never okay to chastise, belittle, or insult someone for a trait or characteristic that either a) cannot be changed or b) is irrelevant to the subject matter

If you've got a problem with someone, point at the problem. Anything else is just manipulative.

@JessTheUnstill I lost respect for so many supposedly progressive and body image positive folks when Trump took office. People who had always advocated for the higher standard immediately started sharing jokes about his appearance and justifying it based on his behavior.
@JessTheUnstill This every single day. Looks do not equal character.
@JessTheUnstill Strong disagree. People like Donald Trump deserve to have EVERYTHING about them made fun of.
@TheBlargg @JessTheUnstill Then you really missed the point. The world does not revolve around Trump, and other people deserve dignity and respect, and not have their circumstances and characteristics weaponized as insults and bad things to be.
@JessTheUnstill Agreed. Safest approach: don't be glib or disrespectful to other people, ever. Be earnest. Being glib and disrespectful about other people is maybe harmless behind closed doors with people you know intimately well. In public, it doesn't work. It doesn't advance your point, certainly doesn't convince the person or people you are mocking, and only stands to have collateral damage in the form of innocent people you are also mocking.
@JessTheUnstill and why do you need to make fun of someone?
@JessTheUnstill Yes, attack their ideas and their souls (or lack thereof, depending on your worldview).

@JessTheUnstill

So what you're saying is we can only call Gaetz "Butthead" due to his political and intellectual views, and not because he also looks like a 30 year old version of a cartoon character named that?

Could be kinda rough.

@JessTheUnstill yes. There are plenty of things to take issue with that aren’t body shaming/looks based.

And can people *please* stop stop slut-shaming melania trump. There are a lot of things to criticize her for without veering into that.

@JessTheUnstill "Good is something you do, not something you are." - @GWillow

I try to think about this every day.
