I was learning #russian on #duolingo for a while.
Now I've decided to learn #yiddish .

#languages #learninglanguages

@IoanSaid I've started learning french this week on #duolingo in anticipation of doing #pbp23 next year

@paulfreeman what's the last bit?

Happy to toot to you in French if you want!

@IoanSaid it's an 1200 km bike ride from Paris to Brest and back. Runs once every 4 years and is older than the Tour de France

At present, I doubt I'd understand your toots but starting to remember school lessons is fun and I'm picking it up

@paulfreeman well, if ever you want to send something out I'll try and reply simply 😊
I teach French online via a website called #Superprof

@IoanSaid I may well tap up your services then because whilst Duolingo is fun to use, I don't think it is ideal way to properly learn a language

I'm in awe of multilingual folk as I've not had much success in the past

@paulfreeman speaking, hearing is key.
When I was learning Welsh, I was practising as much as I could and I also used to listen to BBC Cymru, watch S4C, etc.. It really helped!

Even if it's kid TV or radio.

@IoanSaid thanks, that's a great tip. I also want to learn Scots Gaelic and BBC Alba would be great for that
@paulfreeman btw... Do you want a trick to know the gender of things I'm French?
@IoanSaid I do, why are cats masculine. I feel they are feminine, for no reason I can work out
@paulfreeman PS: Though that's not a great example as animals are gendered... according to their gender!
Male cat: Chat
Female cat: Chatte
Male dog: Chien
Female dog: Chienne
@IoanSaid yeah, already confused - and learning :)
@paulfreeman I also might have some DVDs to watch
@IoanSaid I'm not so bad at reading French but need to focus more on listening and speaking - was good at understanding road closures for the TdF when we visited but couldn't understand the gendarmerie when he told me I had to move as I was in the wrong position whilst watching

@paulfreeman oh my... and they're not always as friendly as our police officers..

Plus Depending on where you were, some of the regional accents are VERY strong!

@IoanSaid I don't know why we had to move, but I wasn't going to argue with him 😀

@paulfreeman nah.. good move. They're a bit more liberal with their truncheon.

When asked about how he felt about a journalist getting his hand blown off after picking up what he thought was a smoke bomb to throw it back at the officers, the guy just shrugged & said "Don't pick up grenades, you won't lose your hand".

#PlaystupidgamesWinstupid prizes.

My brother was proper tonked when the CRS decided they were clearing an area post World Cup celebrations. He was sleeping on a bench.

@IoanSaid ouch! they have a reputation that's for sure.
@paulfreeman More interesting is why a sofa masculine, a bar stool masucline but a chair feminine!
