In a culture of self reliance and rugged individualism accepting care and providing care is a revolutionary act.
@disabledanarchist I wish so many more people understood this more.

@OrobasGacinovic me too, I'm not sure I would if I didn't look through things with a disability lens.

My self before my illness was stuck on self reliance. I was fine with providing care, but had difficulty with receiving it. Being open to care and help is just as necessary as being able to give it.

@disabledanarchist I came upon it in a similar fashion, where I tried to be self reliant in everything and injuries, illness made it impossible. It opened me up to the added human connections I get by feeling and expressing gratitude towards those who help me along in my adventure.

@disabledanarchist

watching some archaeology show, I forget which

archaeologist is asked what's the first sign of civilization; pottery, money, what

she points to a leg bone that was broken and healed

because without civilization they would have been left to the wolves

Said by Margaret Mead and the evidence is hunter-gathering early man looked after each other. She also said only humans do this but some animals do as well.

Thanks! I'm big on The Gist, but my details often leave something to be desired.

@DavidMHarlan @disabledanarchist
This was a major point in David Wengrow’s and David Graeber’s book. The Dawn of Everything. Worth a read.
@DavidMHarlan @disabledanarchist Their major point was that this took place much earlier in our history than we have previously realized.
@disabledanarchist Love this. I worked with ppl who had sudden #cancer diagnosis and this concept was often a challenge for older patients. I would encourage them to lean on their community and harness the power of the good will around them.
