In my opinion, criticisms of mastodon being unusable by the general public are over blown.
@codehag if I can use it anyone can. I just needed some help initially from some very kind old hats.
@codehag She even got the name right!
@codehag Thought it was a Mammoth, ehhh they’re just evolved πŸ™Š
@codehag
Who knew, if you really want to do it and not just reproduce something you already know, it's fine. Only techies speaking in the name of nom-techies find it unusable.
@codehag The onboarding process is a little intimidating, but it would seem that a lot of people are willing to get over that hump for all the benefits.
@codehag I'm finding getting my head round things a bit tricky in places, but I think that's more a question of brain fog causing me to have more trouble with ambiguity than usual (eg does "show X" mean show me X, or show to X?) rather than it being technically complex.
@codehag Twitter was a steep learning curve for many in the early days..
@MMT @codehag I'm surprised by how many people seem to forget this.
@codehag one more step than some... apparently having to pick a server is too much for some people?
@DewiIoan @codehag Twas for me. No idea what the hell I'm doing. :-)
@MaureenNYCNJ
It takes a bit of time. If you want any help/specific questions answered, let me know. I'm happy to help.
@Giagia Thanks, Giselle, I'm not even sure what to ask yet. I'm looking for Twitter but not Twitter. Simple ways to follow columnists, pols, literary & music folk. I barely know what a server is & it seems there's one for every item one I'm interested in.
@MaureenNYCNJ No worries at all! Just ask whenever you want.
Searching is easiest by hashtag (there's no text search), you can see the posts of everyone that your server is connected with: thousands of servers. They can all talk to each other (except some servers get defederated [cut off] if full of trolls, neo nazis, etc).
My best tip is to look at the replies about a subject you like to find more people to follow. And look at the profiles they follow.
Best wishes!
@codehag IMHO the only somewhat valid criticism is that the entire server concept is somewhat foreign to regular people. Mastodon's official website should just suggest a single server for them to join - but I get it's problematic.
@boskee @codehag How is the concept foreign? If you choose your internet access, telephone or Email it is the same - you have to choose which provider fits your needs best.
@Nefex @codehag Sure, but if you look at twitter, or even here, a lot of people do not understand the concept of servers. They want to have a single place, like twitter.com to register and operate from. The federated aspect is confusing and needs to be explained better.
@codehag It's notnthe usability. It's the marketing that's the problem.
@codehag it's literally just choosing the server that's the issue for most people, that's why
@you_jo_girl @codehag
It is the requirement to know the specific name of a server that is the issue. If there was a drop-down list (ideally with brief rΓ©sumΓ© - even better, filters) the problem would not exist.
#Mastodon #Server #Wishlist
@codehag but you're the daughter of Marissa Mayer ;-)
@codehag Yes people make too much out of the choosing a server step.
@codehag *elephant thing* aww it's such a cute way to mention Mastodon
@codehag Well I'm managing ok I think πŸ˜‚ and I never posted elsewhere...too nervous etc! Go Moms!
@codehag oh no my nightmare. followed by "Could you also acvept my follow request for your second account I found?"
@codehag if that happens to me, mastodon will be unusable by me
@codehag I agree. Also the whole thing OMG what server do I choose thing basically is also exaggerated. Pick one, it basically doesn't make much of a difference
@localjoost
It does! The instance I'm on doesn't have neither federated, nor local timeline and I had to browse the comments and look at what others boost to find someone new to follow. I didn't even realize what everyone was talking about: "Federated timeline, what does that even mean?"
It doesn't even have DMs, but I've learned to live with all that 😊
@codehag
@m0xee @codehag Oh. I stand corrected, then. I just took one that was used a lot, and that was recommended to me
@localjoost @codehag After looking at a list/map of instances near me geographically, I can say it does matter ... lots of hater instances among them. If that was your first experience .... ugh. Thank goodness I chose fosstodon first.

@localjoost @codehag

I joined .ie because its a better fit for me.

But also because: I STILL can't login to .lol which has my original account.

I certainly can't migrate it.

In fact I think I'll delete it right now. (Assuming I can!)

@codehag haha
agreed. its as hard as email
@codehag Thats actually really cute :)
@codehag it’s not that hard. Maybe a bit more friction but that helps make it less toxic. Or, that’s how it seems to me.
@codehag omg, this level of cuteness
@codehag I think it is actually easy to use and adapt to.... #easymigration
@codehag I'm seeing a lot of folks on Birdsite complaining about about the binfire over there, but also complaining that ElephantThing πŸ˜€ is too difficult and they can't be bothered putting in the effort to learn a new thing.
@codehag We're reaching the stage on the technology ladder where mothers start adopting!
@codehag The terminology is a bit geeky, but once you get past "pick a server" (any server, really) it's all good.
@codehag Hah, that's lovely β™₯️

@codehag That was delightful πŸ˜ƒ

On the flip side, there are now a bunch of elephants pissed-off at being called mastodons. (I also have a bunch of ex-classmates who probably think "mastadon" is a surgical procedure).

@codehag it's a great place to be
@codehag is your mom a tech geek like the rest of us?
@codehag IME people usually experience software as being complicated in proportion to what they're led to expect.
