I’ve read about people staying in online games as the servers were disconnected, experiencing a little digital apocalypse until the end. Twitter feels more & more like that each time I open it. Wild.
@ryancordell Twitterdämmerung. As I was indulging in that, a car crashed, right under my window. I heard the impact but can't tell what happened, whether it was single car or two cars. #Nashville #Twitter
@ryancordell Yes, I experienced that many times in #SecondLife years ago. We had tremendous role play battles and sometimes time would just slow down when the server became overloaded. A thrown spear would inch away from your hand, people suspended mid-jump. It was crazy. We’d try to move to a region boundary, hoping the server would not be as loaded…
@meltedcheese @ryancordell Is Second Life still going?
@ryancordell @DrInterpreter Yes. I seldom login these days but the #SecondLiife economy seems robust. I’m still taking out 50 $USD or more per month on builds I made in early 2000’s. The internal #scripting engine called #LSL is decent. Couple years ago I wrote ~40,000 lines for a simulation (#robotics experiment ) and it ran great.
@meltedcheese @ryancordell That's impressive. Is that why there's so much excitement around the Metaverse?

@DrInterpreter @ryancordell I don’t know much about the #Metaverse. What I do know tells me it is not very interesting, (yet).

I should also mention the open-source, free federated version of #SecondLife is #OpenSimulator. OpenSimulator.org

Here is a list of #OpenGrid “worlds” that you can visit. Many are interconnected to each other, including to regions in #SecondLife. That’s new. Anybody can set up their own grid and connect it, or not, much like #Mastodon.

@ryancordell I’m afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it.
@TedUnderwood @ryancordell Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do
I'm half crazy all for the love of you

@TedUnderwood @ryancordell the race to tweet the last tweet?

I'm sure some enterprising soul will offer a plaque/nft of the first tweet vs the last

@ryancordell It’s wild. Just sitting here with the popcorn.
@ryancordell I was there in the final moments of the CS:Source beta before everything switched over to Half-Life 2 and… yes. 100% yes.
@ryancordell I keep going back there to see if those I still follow would give their new Mastodon address. It's quite frustrating, the hangers-on that aren't re-locating elsewhere.

@ryancordell I did this on Planetside and the first version of Final Fantasy XIV Online.

Right now feels like the players have been told the sunset date is coming but its about 1-2 months away.

@ryancordell how can I like the post here?
@ryancordell Reply All had a really, really moving podcast that took place in one of those environments right before it was disconnected. It’s was a lot of avatars crying as announcements were being made.
@Das_Nic you know when I said “I’ve read about this” I must have really been remembering that episode because I love Reply All!
@ryancordell Before I posted this, I went furiously looking for the episode name and number, but I couldn't find it! Still on the hunt, tho.
@ryancordell I did this on eWorld. It was quite sad
@ryancordell I can't get off Twitter fast enough
@ryancordell Oh, yes. I did that with #GlitchTheGame. All the little avatars freezing and the music switching off.
@ryancordell yes. And I live tweeted the switching off of analogue TV.
