As a very (im)mature “life-long learner” I decided to finally learn how to play guitar during lockdown to stop me totally losing my mind; as a result, I can now play lots of open chords and a fair few songs with some of them even sounding a bit like they are supposed to; I have recently managed to play an F chord and Fm chord and so my barre chord journey is beginning; on that note, any helpful advice would be gratefully received - thank you “tooters” in advance!

@11neilc1 I’m trying to learn watercolor for grief therapy. I think my best advice is love all your “wrong” things, the wrong chords, wrong beats, wrong fingering…and thank your fingers, arms, head etc. when they all agree. This is an attempt at my adult daughter and her nephew, my late grandson.
@11neilc1 learn the Major scale. It's boring but will help everything else make sense. Oh, and keep going 👍
@11neilc1 The F chord is a big milestone for sure!
@11neilc1 If you need more material and like a structured approach to learning there is none better than justinguitar.com. He's been at if for quite a while and has an excellent guitar course. The course is free. He has some things you can pay for (which I have happily done), but you can learn a lot from the free material. Much better than just using youtube.
@bsquared awesome - thanks! 👍

@11neilc1 Hello. Long time guitar learner and new to Mast/Fediverse just now getting around to lists so added you to my Guitar list. Not sure how we all talk yet but if anyone else is interested favorite or retoot or whatever and I’ll add.

Would say I’m beginner to intermediate, now getting to learn chords up the neck and triads, a little theory, a lot of youtube lessons all over the place. #learningguitar #guitarlearner #beginnnerguitar #intermediateguitar

@11neilc1 One thing on the journey I'd liked to have realized earlier is that all the open shapes are really barred chords too. Spoiler: The E is just an F shape barred at the neck. And with barred chords you can go up and down the neck and still have actual chords. Stick with F shape for now and try it up and down neck. Was revelatory to me that "open" chords were really barred chords in disguise. Hope this makes sense... 2 frets up from F barred is G. 2 up from there is A. #learningguitar
