Having been here since 2016, I can tell you there is definitely no such thing as a consensus on usage of content warnings on the fediverse. It's a decentralized network that doesn't belong to any one party, so by definition there is no single culture on it. Different corners have different expectations and customs.
For my part, I've always seen them as something at the discretion of the author. As the reader, you have a plethora of tools to disengage from unwanted content on Mastodon—with even better filters coming in 4.0—and harassment is not one of them. People who are arriving now have as much right to be here and bring their own culture as the ones who came before them.
@Gargron What's the timeline for 4.0?

@srinathkrishna @Gargron

Same Q.

RC1 is rolled out on mastodon.social where my initial account was and I really liked the edit capability 🙂

✨ A new release candidate for Mastodon 4.0 is now available for testing! We are planning to release the stable on Monday, along with some important security fixes. Stay tuned! https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.0.0rc3

Mastodon
@Gargron It is nice to hear that because I'm seeing a lot of pseudo gatekeeping along the lines of "all you new people, here's the rules, shoes off, only sit on the furniture that has plastic on it, we don't use the silverware and please wash the disposable plates when you are done" so to speak.
@zate @Gargron it's going to get wilder than anyone who's been here for a while can possibly imagine, I tell you. I was there when reddit started a bunch of things +for fun+ that are now entire institutions in +real life+, Imgur being one very good example. That kind of thing is probably happening now and so fast that if we blink we will miss it.
@zate @Gargron which is definitely happening and I've been guilty at times, but there is still a lot of screaming that made other platforms not so great.
@zate @Gargron I saw a lot of this last night, Thursday evening here in the UK, I did raise an eyebrow or two to be honest, one post was pretty damning and adversarial.
@zate @Gargron Yes. Getting policed by a complete stranger in a banter convo between 2 ppl who have known each other for years in the Muskverse was a bit off putting. Some ppl are definitely defending their 'patch' from pesky interlopers. It will be disruptive until both sides adapt.
@zate I am not sure your analogy is fair. How about 'you're a migrant that arrived in a new country. Are you going to laugh at the local culture, ignore customs, systematically jump the queue and burp loudly after a good meal at the restaurant?'. Just saying, the host and the guest must learn to live together, it isn't just one way, I'll keep MY culture and that's that!

@sheislaurence I like the first part of your analogy, it's definitely a 2 way street. The second part though I think starts to tip its hat and the buried issue. We're all guests. We're all renting space.

The good thing is that the network, and the software give really good tools for neighborhoods that are worried about the new neighbors, to simply build a big fence and wall them off. Even really good tools for individuals to block and remove any domains etc they don't like.

That all being said, I think the end goal is for everyone to move a little closer, people to understand and remember what its like to be new and excited, and new people to keep their eyes and ears open and remember their manners.

@zate indeed, the analogy was catering for 'both sides' in terms of view of a migrant (deliberately picking aspects people find most offensive, being French I can tell you, WE DO NOT QUEUE! 😂 ).

I like that people are being vocal about what their culture is and I am grateful to 'old timers' for educating me in their experience of #fediverse. But yes, some were arseholes about it too. I am sure they'll learn the hard way that seniority isn't enough to change behaviours.

@Gargron Thank you, this is a very nice sentiment
@Gargron Glad to hear this. Was starting to think I’d need to find somewhere else to go.
@Gargron Thank you for saying this I was starting to feel guilty about being here like I was an unwanted house guest.
@Gargron That last sentence is very important, thank you!
@Gargron still learning the #fediverse culture. Thank you for your honest and fearless thoughts. More power to you Sir!

@Gargron thank you for writing this I'm of the same mind on this issue and I'm really hoping the 4.0 filtering will alleviate the hostility around content warnings.

Also sorry I have been a bit bothersome and complained so much in the past (and possibly recently), I really appreciate everything you've done to make Mastodon a success.

Thank you.

@Gargron that said, I hope people leaving a toxic environment don’t bring toxic habits with them. I’m more interested in adapting to this more elegant, peaceful environment than trying to make it something else. It’s been a warm welcome here and I appreciate it.
@jayarnold I think that's the key, right there. We have to abandon the toxic habits we developed on the bird site (even if we developed them accidentally, they were still toxic. #newbie #unlearningtwitterhabits
@jayarnold @Gargron I agree, Jay. I’ve only just created my Acct here, but, I’m committed to leaving behind frenetic communication behaviors that many of us developed in what felt like survival mode at Twitter over the last 6 years. I’ll be focused on building community and solution driven dialogue to tackle some of the more serious issues facing us instead of taking the “red alert, all hands on deck” tweeting approach that I and many others have taken. I aim to be focused & intentional.
@jayarnold @Gargron Agree! Going back and forth the last few days, it's becoming clearer the toxic aspects of Birdland and I'm VERY eager to leave that behind, well said!
@Gargron Thank you for this. As one of the newcomers, and I can't speak for any but myself, but I believe most of us came here wanting to be respectful to the established community and we want to do our best and fit in. Thanks to you and everyone else for making us feel welcome.
@Gargron This is so good to hear/read! Thanks!

@Gargron Thank you! I thought I was going mad. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I've seen nude CW posts for Only Fans & it's not bothered me as I just ignore them.

Posting current affairs & politics which affect our daily lives is standard across social media. Being told new users are not welcome for doing so, smacks of the very elitist division & prejudice, veteran Fediversers claim they left the bird site for to join Mastodon.

Thank you for clearing this up. I don't post nudity or violence, so won't be CW my Toots. 🙏🏾

@AnthonyFStevens @Gargron it was hair-raising that people were demanding that politics be cw'd, while implying that this is the standard practice here. Mercifully, it appears that the opposite is the case

@pinkopalest @Gargron Having only being here for 48 hours, I was seriously considering leaving them with it & battling on, on the birdsite.

Eugen said EXACTLY what I'd spent a few hours saying, if people don't want to hear politics from me, ignore or block. What could be more simpler? 🤷🏾‍♂️

I wouldn't mind, but there's a feature where you can automatically CW all content by default, these few people I discussed this with would only have it their way, or now way. How odd! 😳

@AnthonyFStevens @Gargron judging by your EU flag, I thought you were here to chat about tv and sports, wouldn't dream of thinking you're here to talk about Brexit and European politics! 😛
@pinkopalest @AnthonyFStevens @Gargron I eased back on Mastodon for a few months last year. I couldn't open the federated feed in public because it was full of furry porn. It's laughable that people who've been here a month are trying to put content warnings on everything. There's a time and a place for CW, but muting and filters are going to be the most economic solutions.
@bigeats270 @AnthonyFStevens @Gargron maybe I should put CWs on my non-political posts, come to think of it, so people who follow me for my pearls of political wisdom don't feel let down
@pinkopalest @AnthonyFStevens @Gargron I'm starting to think that people used to Twitter feel that muting and blocking people is an aggressive act that's done after you've been pushed to the limit. Treat your feed as a curated space. There's nothing personal about not wanting to see a specific person or post. You can even put a timer on how long you mute an account. It's less stressful than badgering everyone.

@bigeats270 @pinkopalest @Gargron Agreed!

I've had 4 voluptuous ladies offering to make my wildest dreams come true in the last 48 hours. Whilst flattered they chose me out of 3 billion adult males, the deal breaker was the money to make this happen. Don't they know we're in a cost of living crisis? 😳

Anyway, I've duly ignored them, only to be harassed by "Some Guy" over CW-ing my toots because I post politics?

Jugs ✅
Politics ❌

He didn't have an issue with the voluptuous ladies though.. 🤷🏾‍♂️

@bigeats270

I mute and block on Twitter all the time. My feed there is a curated space because that is my right as a user: to put all the tools at my disposal. People who don't like the fact that I curate wouldn't like me much anyway, though.

@Gargron I just learned about the forum. Looks great! Wondering if I may ask, where does the term "Fediverse" comes from?
@cq @Gargron I imagine a combination of "federated" + "universe".
@cq @Gargron it's a federated universe.
@Gargron Great comments.
I believe the beauty of the fediverse is that we can agree on the protocol and tools, and every group can decide their own moderation rules.
Having thousands of independent sites enables each community to self-regulate (as they probably know themselves better), the rest of us may choose to engage or not.
I know that at this point we are all trying to beef up our servers to accommodate the new comers, but in the long run many of them would run their own instances too.
@Gargron Thank you for this update. There's a lot of strong voices in the CW debate so it's nice to hear from people in charge of servers to get their take.

@Gargron See your point! And I'd agree. There's a lot of reasons for #cw, but also some against them.
Like: the decision about trigger categories, #triggers can vary much individually.You don't want to leave people out. Or you don't want to hide critical information and at the end of the day everything is political...

So my solution was seeing #cw as a sort of formalized thing, a useful container for #hashtags and keywords.
But there's also a downside. The layout becomes too monotonous and 1/2

@Gargron always having to extra-click postings can get to your nerves - it makkes usage slightly unattractive.
For me the ideal solution would be, if #Toots were categorized automatically by hashtags or keywords and users can choose in their settings, if they want specific content to be wrapped, with the exception of violence, shocking pictures etc. For those I suppose general wrapping would better.
@Gargron I'm really appreciative of how welcoming that you and so many others have been. Thanks for having us!

@Gargron I'm new here and I really appreciate the content warning culture and general non-harassment vibe. ofc CW shouldn't be used to silence or hide discussion of anti-Blackness, transphobia or other oppression, but I think it's a good norm to have.

leaving Twitter, I've been trying to be intentional about having an online experience not ruled by toxicity and feedback loops of anger and negativity. I appreciate how both Mastodon design and Mastodon culture encourage that

@Gargron thank you for saying new users have a right to create the culture too. I’ve read a few things this evening that has made me feel really unwelcome as a new user. Nice to see a counter narrative.
