@Gargron do we migrate ours toots, too?
@Gargron so we will post all we wrote here?
@Nynaeve The old account won't disappear (although you can delete it if you want)
@Gargron @Nynaeve Will it link your old account to your new one, so that people reading your old posts are sent to your new account when they click your profile?

How to migrate from one server to another

With the sad news that KNZK was shutting down we thought it might be useful for people to have a refresher on the features that Mastodon has built in that make moving instances easy and painless. Backing up Your Data Data export If you are moving to a new instance the first thing you will want to do is to get a backup of all of your data. Thankfully this process is painless with the Data Export tab under the “Import and Export” page.

@Gargron @Nynaeve But are they deleted or they just continue to live on the old server?
@mayaisloading @Gargron @Nynaeve I moved mine..and my posts are still on that old server..A header indicates that User has moved this profile
@Gargron like in animal crossing
@S4lk0 @Gargron til: animal crossing was fedirated.
@Gargron En español, por favor.

@Gargron cucha, @Juanmi_News , aquí hay algo que puede interesar, algo de luz a este potaje 😂😂😂
@Gargron remember to log out of new server between 3 and 4, I didn't stumped me for hours

Note that this does NOT migrate posts! Which I would argue are more important than followers - you can do followers manually. Posts, you're out of luck.

@IceWolf
Try #hubzilla
It's another software connected to the #Fediverse and you can migrate between instances without losing anything.
@bob You know, I've heard of Hubzilla, but I'm not entirely sure what it is. Didn't know it's connected to the fediverse, that's cool!
@Gargron will you creating an mobile app also ??
@kidddefense We have multiple mobile apps, check out the "Mobile apps" link in the footer

@Gargron As addition for people trying this: Sometimes, the old server happens to have old data fetched. This means, it doesn't have the newest account data of the new account. This might result in the error that the new account doesn't properly refer back to the old one.

In this case, do a simple search for your user URL(!) (e.g. https://chaos.social/@esureL) to update the data and then try again. :)

@Gargron
Thanks so much Sven @esureL, this was the info I needed!!! Tried to get it to work for 2 days
@Gargron It's only possible to move from another account which is on Mastodon 3.0.1 😢

@Gargron Logged on to my mastodon.social account on a web browser.

Went to Account Settings -> Account Migration -> Move to a different Account

@Gargron Damn! Hit Toot! Too soon!

Ok, logged into my mastodon.social account

Went to Account Settings -> Account Migration -> Move to a different account.

Entered Handle of the new Account

Entered the Password if the Current (mastodon.social) account

Tells me my mastodon.scot Account is not back referencing this account.

@Gargron of cause this only works when both servers are on mastodon 3+ and all the followers are too, unfortunately there are still a lot on earlier versions
@Gargron this feature works so well

@Gargron

6. Find out several instance admins of your followers/followees have previously blocked your new instance for dubious reasons and you can no longer communicate with them, with no indication that the links are broken :(

For friends in Japan and especially on the instance of mstdn.jp @mstdn_jp. I feel sorry to hear the bad news. I would like to reference to Eugen @Gargron 's toot as an instruction to migrate your important Mastodon accounts.

Eugen's post => https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/103393780267601137

More information on Docs.JoinMastodon.Org => https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/

( If someone has already translated the migration instruction into Japanese, that would be much helpful. )

Take care! We stand solidarity with you.

Take your information and do what you want with it.

@Gargron Is this still current? Or has the process changed in the past few years?
@Gargron and if you want to keep both. I want to hop from server to server
@Gargron Is there a tool available for migrating toots, too? So sad to lose one's history.
@thilo currently you would have to repost each of your posts, which would basically flood your followers and the network. Let's hope #Mastodon soon will implement some form of #NomadicIdentity...
@Gargron
@Gargron I love how you don’t even need to manually export or download any files as part of this process
@Gargron I've heard from several people for who this did not work and who's followers etc. didn't get transferred properly. Any idea what the reason for that could be? Or is it a temporary glitch because of how busy the servers are? 😊
'Move account to alias' is a useful feature because one's followers (provided they have the auto follow when account moves feature enabled) do not need to do anything. It's a feature that is available on Rebased (Soapbox BE) instances, as well as Pleroma BE instances with Soapbox frontend. Posts do not migrate. With Pleroma FE you can export follows, followers, mutes and blocks, then import to a new instance, i.e. the former account doesn't need to exist, just the backed up data.
I'm also aware that if you're going between platforms you can export your user list as a csv file and import on the other side. I did something similar when I migrated from friendica to pleroma.
