After about a week, I'm already noticing a distinct tone of voice change between how I talk on Twitter vs how I talk here.

(This is a version of a thread I did in the other place, full disclosure and for comparison, at: https://twitter.com/hondanhon/status/1590415094214955008)

How I talk on the birdsite is already different from how I talk here, in the Fediverse [sic].

I consider myself a words person and have enough self reflection to know that I am also snobby and when I'm being snobby.

One day I expect I'll be more comfortable with the neologism Fediverse, but only in the sense that I only slightly tolerate, and with great reluctance, the phrases "twittersphere" and "blogosphere", at least one reason of which is their coinage and usage by marketers and self-promoters who I instinctively take a disliking to as gross and yucky.

#fediverse #twittersphere #blogosphere #selfpromoters #marketing #ugh

Honestly, this distate doesn't make much sense, or at least makes sense in that I might have issues with acceptance and accepting my geeky/dorky side, and that I feel *embarrassed* by the word Fediverse, as if I wish there were a better-sounding one, but that won't matter over time -- either it's accepted or not, I identify as a descriptivist linguist and grammarian!

In any event, please DO NOT consider this an invitation for anyone to coin or use the alternative terms:

* mastosphere [sic]
* fedisphere [sic]

Thank you for following along with my train of thought ramblings :)

@danhon Already calling Fediblag
@danhon surely it's "mastodontorium"?
@trib we should all have an attitude of mastodo instead of mastodont

@danhon Trunkster?

I’ll let myself out..

@danhon I love how much Fediverse sounds like fait divers while being fully unrelated to the phrase
@danhon I kinda dig fediverse. If you think of a sphere as being an enclosed space (with all that entails, pollution-wise) then this is more like a night sky of twinkling connected nodes. Better fediverse than multiverse IMO.
@danhon Been on mastodon for years and still have a hard time not imagining the Fediverse as, like, the Spiderverse but for federal agents.

@danhon does it help to think of FeDiverse as Iron Diversity?

No?

Probably best we just go with "Mastodon" even if it's not technically correct.

@danhon I spent years working at Chicago newspapers and I never got used to Chicagoland.
@danhon “fediverse” seems to me more open and matter-of-fact, less dotcom branded hype
