Sharing my first article on here! It's a piece I've written for CIGI on the EU's biometric smart borders, which reveal a "conflict between the European Union’s stated democratic values rooted in human rights, on the one hand, and a technocratic impulse to digitalize at all costs, on the other." Check it out! https://www.cigionline.org/articles/europe-at-a-crossroads-over-planned-use-of-biometrics/

@hackylawyer focus of #EES / #entryexitsystem is on #migration, travel to #Europe, use of #biometrics at the EU border fits this purpose. Over 500 mln travellers yearly.

“The system will collect biometrics in the form of facial images and fingerprints for purposes of one-to-one identity verification (comparing individuals to their own biometrics), one-to-many identification (comparing an individual to all stored entries in the database), and reduced duplication of personal data processing.”

@Mndell thanks for your comments.

If you read my piece in full (which you've quoted here), you'll see that my concerns are not primarily about the use of #biometrics at the border but rather about the significant deficiencies in the process for overriding fundamental rights & freedoms in implementing the new measures. This is most evident in the impact assessment undertaken.
