I already blocked several nazi- and terf related instances as a result of this question. Shall I write which ones I blocked here so you can take precautions? And I have added some rules to my server so people know where I stand.

@ProfKatrinaPritchard it’s basically the same as how we use the word server here. But a server in real life is actually something else and can hold more than a mastodon instance for example. So an instance is the right word for a mastodon. You are on the instance https://mastodon.online and I own the instance https://socialserver.science
But my instance is on a server at https://masto.host

@ProfKatrinaPritchard @miekeroth an instance is any type of server that can host people on here. It can be Mastodon (most common right now), Pleroma (the one I'm using) or Misskey (very cute), PixelFed (for pics), etc etc.

This is what makes the Fediverse the Fedi (federated)-verse.

@socalledb yes, it’s easy: go to the instance you want to join, make an account. Add in the account settings the name of your old account as an alias. Go to the old account and fill in the name of the new account and the password of your old account. It will take a while before your followers come along, but they will.
