Notice how he's defining verification as pertaining to journalists, not public figures more generally.

That's nutty, first of all, bc one of the values that pre-Elmo Twitter had was its utility for journalists.

Way to kill more value, boss.

@emptywheel Judas he’s such a snowflake.
@emptywheel Who doesn't want anyone to claim to be a journalist! Shit is literally just a "I paid money" badge, says nothing of the quality of info. How he hasn't gotten this through his head is beyond me.
@cactusdan @emptywheel it's almost like Herschel Walker waving his "badge" at the debate.
@emptywheel my prediction is that he will undo the new "verification" policy by Friday.
@emptywheel that is pretty rich coming from him.
@emptywheel
What has he swallowed now?
alert day care time.

@emptywheel for a mere $8 a month…

Kind of like becoming an ordained priest instantly via a random website?

@emptywheel this is so weird because "verification" should mean "authentication of identity", but this isn't that at all. It's #doublespeak for the opposite: paying a fee to act as whoever one wants
Maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't sound like there's any validation of identity; there's only a transaction involved.
@seth @emptywheel I am not a lawyer, but if that doesn’t set him up for all kinds of trouble — licensing people to misrepresent themselves as other people, and officials…
@emptywheel The Head Twit does not appear to have any idea how to do this. Wonder how his other businesses avoid being ruined by this guy?
@emptywheel another Musk grade comedic error. He’ll be lucky if he doesn’t end up getting sued by actual verificati, and in the meanwhile, trolling will go hog wild, with no punishment unless they’re trolling poor little Eloi.

@emptywheel

It's just so disgusting to watch.

The whole idea of "democratizing journalism" is the embodiment of the Argumentum Ad Populum fallacy.

Journalism only works when it's ACCURATE, but allowing any clown to call themselves a "journalist" for $8/month means people will just boost what they want to hear.

@emptywheel in a few weeks we’ll be posting screenshots of Misha Flynn retweeting Epoch Times on Elmo’s sickly bird app 🤷🏻‍♂️
