Kinda wondering if Mastodon is considering an alternative onboarding flow that avoids all the server lingo, and just chooses one with reasonable load. Server admins could opt in.. I see so many non-technical users befuddled by the entry process.. #mastodon #onboardingprocess #onboarding #friction
@gregfelice I suspect that's going to have to come from other sources, would be great if the main site were redesigned. The "join the server that matches your interests" messaging is super confusing
@dswersky totally. Im seeing so many nice people scared off
@gregfelice that might make sense if there were more servers that weren't attempting to build a specific kind of community, how many explicitly general servers are there?
@placeybordeaux just spitballing here. I think you can abstract away the server language under something more universally understood, like home or home community. Seems like there's a decision to empower the engineers who donate the systems to also curate and govern the population in their site, and I like that, but it's still confusing. I think the namespace needs some work. Regardless, so happy to be here and to feel I have a voice
@gregfelice I heard that https://instances.social/ is a good start.
