Figured I should do an #introduction :
I'm a Pharmacy assistant and own a #pharmacy together with my parents. I mainly run the business side of things and make sure things all things IT go smoothly as well.
In my spare time I help contribute to open source projects (just data, not programming) like #Openstreetmap #Wikidata #Commons etc...
I also do a bit of #beekeeping ,have two beehives sitting in my backyard which hopefully will survive this winter 🤞
And I should also mention that I moderate some social media groups and a Discord community focused around watching #Anime inside a #VR cinema: https://schedule.vranimesociety.com/
#introduction

#beekeeper #beekeeping Also here's a pic of my two beehives with a thermal camera. The hive on the left is a regular wooden hive. The one on the right is a styrofoam hive.

I'm not a fan of using unrecyclable tings like styrofoam, but for the bees it's much better because they lose less heat -> need to consume less of their stored food -> need to move less trough the hive (they move upwards as they eat trough their food) -> higher chance of survival

@thibaultmol
That styrofoam isolates better I would expect, but what are your thoughts on moisture management? The wood will take it up and balance humidity a bit, so also less work for the bees. At least during summer.

@raphadue it's a fair question, #beekeeper 's have mixed opinions on it.

As I always say: ask something to 5 beekeepers and you'll get 7 different opinions.

Because of how the bottom plate works, it should allow moisture to just drip down and out of the hive. In theory

@thibaultmol
Very true, same goes for all the #beekeeper's I know. Personally, I'm a fan of the #topbarhive with a so called #ecofloor. Effectively just means having leaves and bark covering the metal mesh. The overall idea being to emulate a natural environment much as a hole in a tree and to provide space for an ecosystem of beneficial insects. Also rather controversial...

@raphadue interesting! The problem with top bar hives is that they usually don't really work in climates that experience winters because of their shape (wide instead of tall) #beekeeping
