Updated about me #histodons @histodons @histodon:

I’m a historian of #CentralEurope on #sport during the #ColdWar focusing on #Hungary. My book #ChangingtheGlobalGame studies how Hungarian sportspeople navigated #statesocialism + #IOC #culturalimperialism

As an ex- #NCAA #D1 #athlete + cohost of #EndofSport podcast, I critique how people use sport structures to harm others #racism #abuse #transphobia to help sport as healthy, equitable! (97k+ downloads! https://theendofsport.podbean.com/)

@histodons @histodon

I teach courses on #nationalism and #memory in Europe, modern #worldhistory broadly, world histories of sport as well as #WWI #FWW, #oralhistory #ColdWar Europe focusing on #gender #labor #immigration, #globalmigrations, and next semester on #authoritarianism in #postcolonial states!

Believe strongly in #publicscholarship to break down academic gatekeeping of knowledge & expand communities!

After being harassed by an ESPN-Indiana radio show host in spring 2021 + receiving threats of sexual violence, I advocate for protective measures institutions should provide for scholars doing #publicscholarship (#journalists need this too!)

I fully oppose AHA president Sweet’s right wing-supporting “anti-presentism” words - #history is always political, “neutrality” is an oppressive tool, past-present connex matters!

@JohannaMellis @histodon @histodons did you see the bit that came out later, that AHA has had a committee working on broadening disciplinary norms on Scholarship and public engagement for the last year?

Puts Sweet's remarks in a whole new light. He was literally trying to preempt and kneecap the work of one of AHA's emerging project reports!

@histodons @sdfahrenthold @histodon i certainly did!! It’s awful that he’s essentially derailing their work.
@JohannaMellis @histodons @sdfahrenthold @histodon Jesus this kind of thing makes it a lot easier to not look back as I’ve moved from History to DH to UX. The national orgs always seem wildly out of touch with day to day reality
@sdfahrenthold @JohannaMellis @histodon @histodons Yes, I'd seen that when rooting around the AHA website to figure out where this new stuff from Sweet on modes of history was... (still haven't found the defense of the monograph). So I wondered.
@susandamussen @sdfahrenthold @histodon @histodons it was in an Atlantic piece where he was interviewed extensively : (
@JohannaMellis @sdfahrenthold @histodon @histodons Ah, I missed it in the self-justification. Too much David Frum.
@JohannaMellis @histodon @histodons This is one of my questions about public history. I got harassed by white nationalists last summer. My department responded really well, but I don’t think we have thought enough about the costs and danger of working with the public and how to mitigate them.
@histodon @amandahk @histodons agreed, sadly we haven’t. And if same the same for public sociology and other fields. Institutions are just pretending it won’t happen and so don’t need to prepare for it. But they’re happy for us to build prestige for them.
@histodon @amandahk @histodons I tweeted a bunch about this stuff since spring 2021 and have a co-authored article in the works. At some point I’ll share more on here, but you’re welcome to search through my Twitter if it’d be helpful! Same handle
@JohannaMellis Great to see you here, Johanna. ☘️💚
@JohannaMellis Pleased to find you here. I work on trans and intersex issues and am a former swimmer, so have been drawn into these debates over the past few years. I'm fascinated by cultural perceptions of what sport is and what it's for, which advantages are acceptable and which aren't, etc.
@jennie_kermode I’ve talked a lot about this stuff on Twitter and my podcast, and glad to find people on here advocating for trans inclusion and not cis-led discrimination!
