We Pay an Ugly Cost for Ads on Twitter https://nyti.ms/3Wud0zn
The move Twitter -> Mastodon reminds me of the move Matlab -> Python. I like Matlab, but Python makes more sense. So, I just signed up to pay a small monthly amount to Mastodon (info at https://mastodon.social/about). Not super clear if the funds go to my "instance" (mastodon.social) or to Mastodon in general (if such a thing exists?), because this fediverse thing is, hmm, complicated. But it seems worth it. As someone else nicely put it, I'd rather be the customer than the product.

@MatteoCarandini heheh never heard this, but you made smile because this makes sense in a depth ironical way ;)

have you tried a mobile app ?

@MatteoCarandini To answer your q on Mastodon in general, that's not a thing. You're right that the funds go to your instance. Depending on your instance and its admins, my understanding is that money goes to server upkeep and to pay admins/mods for their work. Most instances will have a link to where you can donate and if they don't a quick DM to the admin can clarify where you can support :)
@MatteoCarandini
mastodon is software, and mastodon.social is one instance of that software, so sort of like how there is WordPress the software and then lots of sites that run WordPress. does that make sense? if you are donating to mastodon.social, that money goes towards server costs (idk if they have transparent books, mebs other stuff too). it is also possible to donate to the development of mastodon the software, I'm p sure the link is on the GitHub repo
@MatteoCarandini
happy to answer questions, been doing lots of fedi guiding this week.

@MatteoCarandini

FWIW, mastodon.social is one of the instances run by the main dev team.

So your contribution is probably earmarked for hosting costs, but is going to the same group who manage the app development too! (For which they also have a Patreon.)

For users on more local instances it's good to double check that you're contributing where you intend to.
