I’ve been here for years and I’m an instance admin and I still don’t really know how the posts go from one website to another. I think it’s the same technology they use to send pokemon to a different game boy
@prehensile they grow legs and walk
@Okesska @prehensile my favorite kind of visual metaphor!
@CaptainHanyuu @Okesska @prehensile anyone who mentions “visual metaphors” is worth a follow imo / ime 😊
@prehensile It's all over Wi-Fi now. Back in the OSocial days you had to use a link cable.
@earfolds @prehensile and you had to use a terminator when you got to the last instance.
@prehensile got to catch all the toots!!
@whiskeysailor trade you a 30 boost selfie for some rare shitposts
@prehensile i think they put the posts on the little creatures as held items. like in the games with mail. i think i saw that somewhere
@rudi fave if you think this sounds true
@prehensile That means if I hit the power halfway through I get duplicate posts right?
@pixellight it’s even easier than that, you just have to press the boost button
@prehensile that's vital technology.
@prehensile be careful apparently shitposts are now weaponized as completely "true lore" to haters on Mastodon lol
@prehensile this does mean that for a post to appear on another instance, it must disappear from your instance. mastodon's innovation is sending the posts back and forth so fast that you don't notice they're gone
@codl @prehensile if you defederate at the exact right time you can cause a post duplication glitch
@prehensile I assumed it’s Ted Stevens and his Series of Tubes Technology.
@prehensile @doot Yes it’s GBLC/IP (Game Boy Link Cable over IP).
@prehensile I just found this whatever it is named and I call this non-Elon Twitter.
@prehensile yeah i had to plug in a GameBoy link cable into the server so federation worked
@prehensile Oh you young and naive people! Obviously the instances are connected via Laplink, exchanging information at the speed of light (or at least faster than a null-modem cable)
@prehensile I think they use the power of the Q Continuum.
@prehensile how to quote tweets ?? can we do that here??
@cat you can’t. It’s an intentional design decision - quote tweets encourage dunking and talking about people instead of to them
@prehensile A German dwarf called Eugen reads them all, writes them on the back of an envelope then runs to an internet cafe in Leipzig and posts them everywhere.
@prehensile
Yup.
Fediverse inhabitants are very much like Pokémon
@prehensile I heard I f you post while holding a metal coat you turn into a Steelix
@prehensile What day are all us new Twitter users having to take the Mastodon final exam?
@prehensile are we talking link cable or IR sensor?
@prehensile
Glad somebody finally automated the timing of switching the other Gameboy off so they clone properly. Way less headache than trying to do it with a link cable across the aisle of a moving school bus.
