So #introduction time I guess!

I've been a #sailmaker, #rigger, #splicer, and parts and porcurement in the marine industry for almost 30 years. Have worked with govt entities and NGO's. Taught #splicing for the Canadian Coast Guard.

My knees still work so I'm looking to move to the #osint, #pentest, #hacking world. Basically trading one passion career for another! I'm doing it self taught style so any helpful tips or advice is very, very welcome.

Love #sailing, racing, #ramen and my kits.

Also! If you have any #boat related questions please ask! I love to help and talk boats. I'm a Marine Service Tech so might have the answer you're looking for 🤷‍♀️
@enienaber welcome!
Awesome! Learning an eye splice was on my to do list this week! Putting another longer rope and a secondary pickup buoy on our mooring, last time we arrived at spring tide, it was under water :)
@nomand oooh, that’s never a good sight. Are you doing a three strand? My only tip for you is it’s all in how your start, get that and the rest is pretty straightforward. An old shipwright showed me a trick for it. Lay the three strands over where you’re going to splice, with the middle laying on top and the two sides hanging down. Then do your first tucks on the ridges that they lay on. I hope that makes sense. I can send you a pic tomorrow if you want!
@enienaber Nice to meet you Liz! I love sailing, we're starting to have quite the little sailing community on the fedi now :)
@neauoire yes! I found #TheBoatyard and was all these are my people haha. Nice to meet you too!
@enienaber Welcome! There are a few people in infosec.exchange server you might want to follow.
@dimi I figure as much haha. Any good recs?
@enienaber A few, you can start with @jerry who also boosts a few other people. I folow as well @krebs_on_security_feed @thehackernews and a few others, but the trick is to look at the federated timeline to discover new profiles
@enienaber Also in the Salish Sea. My partner and & spend a lot of time in the Gulf Islands in the summer~ esp Galiano, Saturna.
Anyway, welcome!
@rek thank you! Saturna is so lovely, I’ve not spent a ton of time there but I did get 5 olive trees from the olive growers co-op. I mostly hang around the Penders, Thetis and Gabriola.
@enienaber whoa you did? Damn, that's awesome. I had heard that they had olive trees there.
I've only seen what is accessible by boat, really ;)....
@rek I didn’t actually see the farm, I met the guy at the school and got them in the parking lot. There was an event his kid was in lol. But we drove around and checked out the pub (every gulf island has a ferry terminal pub) and east point. Which I’m sure you’ve experienced! That’s a scary point to go around! Cabbage and Tumbo are lovely though so worth it!
@enienaber Lighthouse Pub is really great, cept the wasp population was a bit nuts this year. Had to check my glass before every sip.
@rek yup! They were making their way out to the boat no matter how far out we were anchored. Had a rolled up magazine outside at all times 🙄
@enienaber self-taught hackers are awesome, welcome!
@gregporterfield thanks yo! It’s an uphill climb but very worth it!
@enienaber I'm a lifetime ocean sailor, yacht owner and have been in pen testing since 1996. If you've got any questions feel free to ask.
@zyx2k thank you so much! I might just hit you up. Right now finding the time to sit and learn/mess around is hard, I feel like I’m heading in a lot of directions at once. Any good recs on fundamentals?
@enienaber If breaking things (pen testing) is where you want to be or start, I'd recommend getting a copy of Network Security Assessment by Chris Mcnab. It's a good foundational start and quite an accessible book.
@zyx2k Thank you! You're a gem!

@enienaber Have to be this guy. lol

So, didn't you technically worth with the Canadian gov't? :)

@mikemathia I very technically did, a few different branches 🙂
@enienaber what made me want to give you a hard time, forgive me, is this:

@mikemathia 😂 all forgiven, I’m brain dead from getting up at 4:30 and things are flying right over my head.

Really it just means I’ve worked with everyone. I’m…. *everywhere* wooooooo
