Okay we have a lot of new people here (thanks Elon!) so I now have to ask an important question: how many of you have mechanical keyboards? Pics if you have 'em! Join the #MechBoardCult! ๐Ÿ˜†

(Bonus points if you've replaced the Windows logo like I did!)

I realized my pictures haven't been doing the board full justice.

So, here's a video, taken in the dark, showcasing the lighting while I type! It's a bit blurry until about 0:09, where the camera focuses.

Of course, I ended my demo with :wq. :)

@benjaminhollon During those first nine seconds I thought I was being introduced to a hacker documentary or something. Very clean setup, the green keycaps light look great ๐Ÿ‘Œ

@overcode Don't they? I got four blank green rubber bottom-row keycaps with the thought of replacing the Windows keys, and I was shocked how nice they look with the RGB.

I'm astonished that I can't find any full-keyboard sets made of rubber.

@benjaminhollon Woww, pretty cool and useful. I had not thought about adding texture to the keycaps. It can even make them more recognizable touch wise.
@overcode Definitely, it's really nice! I'd still take a full set, though, even though it would remove that recognizability. :)
@benjaminhollon mine's a normie keyboard, but still mechanical:
@mvyrmnd Hey, thatโ€™s okay, my roommateโ€™s the same way! Whatโ€™s the model and what type of switches does it have?
@benjaminhollon Logitech G512 Carbon with GX Brown tactile switches

@benjaminhollon

Sure do! I love my #UHK. I also had a Logitech G910 before this one.

@JustineSmithies

@DefectiveWings @JustineSmithies What switches have you got with it?

Looks awesome, by the way. :)

@benjaminhollon @JustineSmithies

I bought mine with box browns. They're great.

@DefectiveWings @JustineSmithies Iโ€™ve been hearing good things about Box switches and should really get a switch tester or something with them. I use MX Clears which I love. Theyโ€™re heavier, but it works well for me since they keep me from bottoming out.
@DefectiveWings @benjaminhollon @JustineSmithies how does the mini-trackball on the UHK work for you?

@worldofgeese

@benjaminhollon @JustineSmithies

It's great for vertical scrolling social media. I find it less useful for horizontal scrolling.

@benjaminhollon Very boring black one, very non-fancy overall. I do however have the most amazing of mouses:
@TimPurdum I like it! What's switches do you use?
@benjaminhollon hmm, I'm actually not a mech aficionado, it's whatever came with the kinesis. I want to say cherry blue? I do like how they feel, although I have to be careful typing during online mtgs.
@TimPurdum Got it. Blues are loud and clicky, which sounds right if you're having to be quiet during meetings. :)
@benjaminhollon yeah, that sounds right! It's fun, though. I bought the kb for the ergo layout, and was worried I'd have to "press harder" on mech keys, but I really like them!
@TimPurdum Yeah, and if you ever do feel like you're pressing too hard, you can get different switches which are lighter. Myself, I prefer very heavy clear switches.
@benjaminhollon
Don't have one, but have been shopping. I want a split one, though, so my options are limited.
And I'm not into customizing, so the Moonlander seems way overkill.
@djwfyi Fair enough. There seem to a be a good number of split boards in this thread, they might be worth looking through.
@M0streng0 Ooh, I like it. What's the model, switches, ect.?
@benjaminhollon Itโ€™s a very good quality Chinese mech-keyboard, that I bought for around 70$ (Gamakay TK68)โ€ฆ it has yellow gateron switches (they are really nice, wasnโ€™t expecting that goodโ€ฆ). Wired / 2.4G / Bluetooth. Hot-Swappable switches. Full RGB backlight. 68 keys in total! A really good keyboard!!

@M0streng0 That's really impressive for a $70 keyboard!

How are the yellows? That's linear, right? I really love my super-tactile MX Clears.

@benjaminhollon Yeah, they are linear! They are really comfortable to type. Itโ€™s similar to red switches, however they require a bit more pressure, only 5g (50g) more than the red onesโ€ฆ They are really smooth
@M0streng0 Is that activation force or bottom-out force? IIRC, my clears are 65g actuation and 95g to bottom out. ๐Ÿ˜‚
@benjaminhollon thatโ€™s a nice questionโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜… But probably the actuation forceโ€ฆ

@M0streng0 Interesting, so not too much lighter than my current switches.

I really need to try out linear switches at some point.

@benjaminhollon I canโ€™t support the loudness of colicky switches, nor the felling of the tactileโ€ฆ I simply love linear, and specially the ones that I have! ๐Ÿ™ƒ
@M0streng0 Fair enough! I love the tactile feeling, myself. I don't mind the noise of clickys (my roommate has blues), but I'd rather not use them myself.
@benjaminhollon The browns are in the middleโ€ฆ maybe you might like them!
@benjaminhollon I love my Dygma Raise. There aren't a lot of mechanical options for those of us whose wrists hate us when we use non-split keyboards.
@benjaminhollon Here is my Crosair K70 mk.2 with cherry MX brown switches. Added custom buttons with the Pico microcontroller for session and master passwords
@benjaminhollon love the colours, I'm just waiting for my Sofle V2.1 PCB's to show up.
I've had a set of gmk Mecha01 caps waiting around for far too long.
@brodie Ducky makes some great keycaps! I was going to get a blander light-color board and caps, but I saw how pretty this one looks and couldn't resist. Then I replaced the super keys with those blank green rubber caps and they work great.
@benjaminhollon I don't have a picture on hand (read as: i'm too lazy to take one) but I'm using the Keychron Q3 QMK, an 80%. It's the best keyboard I've ever used. Solid aluminum frame, heavy af, comes with lubed browns. It's delicious
@ghp I was actually considering getting one of the Q lineup, whichever one is 60%. I really want something with with QMK. I'm currently on a TKL but now that I'm part of the vim elite and hjkl all over the navigation cluster just tends to get in my way. :)
@benjaminhollon I cannot recommend Keychron's custom collection enough. It is worth every single penny. Friends that also bought them say the same. #keychron #mechanicalkeyboard
@ghp Ah, it's the Q4. My hesitation is that the Q4 isn't in the official QMK repo or an option on the QMK configurator, just Q1-3.
@benjaminhollon Oh yeah, I see that on their website. It looks like they provide you a downloadable JSON keymap though. || "Since the VIA code for the Q4 is still awaiting approval from Github, it is not yet automatically recognized, you will need to manually download and import the Q4 keymap..." ||
