> “#zombie” is a good term.
.. the #Greenland ice sheet is trying to recover from damage.. already done. So we’re not.. talking about future #ClimateChange. This foot of sea level rise is.. already caused.. to kind of correct this damage, the ice sheet is trying to shrink and readjust its position.. leaving ice along the margins of the ice sheet.. disconnected. It’s dead ice.. committed to the oceans. And that’s why we’re calling it “#ZombieIce.”

“Zombie Ice”: Greenland’s Melting Glacier to Raise Sea Levels Nearly 1 Foot, Double Previous Estimate

We speak with glaciologist David Bahr, who co-authored a shocking new study this week revealing Greenland’s melting ice sheet will likely contribute almost a foot to global sea level rise by the end of the century. The report, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, finds that even if the world were to halt all greenhouse gas emissions today, 120 trillion tons of Greenland’s “zombie ice” are doomed to melt. Bahr says if global emissions continue to rise, global sea level rise just from Greenland glacial melt could reach two-and-a-half feet. “The faster we can get to net zero, the better we will all be,” he says.

#AmitavGhosh made me senstive how #DavidBahr talks of the #GreenlandIceSheet as a living thing, trying to recover and regulate itself. In #GreatDerangement and #NutmegsCurse Ghosh gets us to see the landscape, mountains, forests.. as makers of meaning,: participants in stories. There are a lot of little mountain shrines in Japan, and sacred little spots by the seas. Maybe we all need a place we choose as a center, and refuse to let it be sold or damaged. Gotta read #BecomingNativeToThisPlace.
In Japanese the equivalent of "anti-American" (a phrase Chomsky says is totalitarian) is 非国民 HiKokuMin. The middle box-like kanji stands for State, nation-state. While paying attention to #Toroku and #Minamata I think why not words like 売国奴 BaiKokuDo for people that sell their villages' water, or land to the State and Corporations? Why no 非村民 HiSonMin or 売村奴 BaiSonDo for men that give rights to exploitative mines, factories, and corporations? Should be seen like selling daughters off for #口減らし
